Help with DDs Catholic Confirmation name

For years DD had her heart set on George. I was ready to have a conversation with our priest to see if girls could take "boys" names for confirmation names. Confused(This is the same DD who thew herself on the floor and howled aged 5 when I explained to her she couldn't be a priest. Being a nun wasn't cutting for her.)

Anyway, she's being confirmed this year and did a bit of Googling herself and came up with Anastasia. Because St Anastasia's feast day is 25th December, and DD likes to feast on the 25th of December.

I'd never heard of St Anastasia, but I know it was popular in Ireland a few decades ago, so surely it is a Catholic Saints name.

My Googling suggests otherwise. Confused

So.....Amelia Anna Tatiana George

or

Amelia Anna Tatiana Anastasia

Or something else?

I nearly took it so I think it is - as it goes I took a male name instead!

Go with what she wants surely? Most people never use their confirmation names at all and just use it as an opportunity for indulgence. Or they choose one they know will make their friends snigger when they hear the priest read it out.

According to this site there are five St. Anastasias. Take your pick Grin

My DDs were told they could pick male names if they wanted but I like your DD's logic for choosing Anastasia and my DD has a lovely friend of that name so I may be biased.

You can definitely have a man's name, my best friend did! We were told to choose a saint we identified with or their story spoke to us somehow and the story of this male saint was special to my friend. We also had to explain the reasons for choosing the name to the priest (and it wasn't supposed to be just because we like the name!). Maybe have a look into the lives of George and Anastacia and see if there's anything relevant to your dd and her life.

One of my friends daughters used it last year for her confirmation name - Anastasia that is not George. She picked it for various reasons mainly to do with her own birthday. There were a couple of "ooh like 50 shades of grey" comments that was just from the priest. Tbh I've never ever used my confirmation name - I had to ask my husbands what his was.
My eldest is making hers in a few weeks - she's going for a well known brand of lager Wink

We googled saints names & came up with a shortlist of Lydia, Jude and Cecia
DD chose Lydia. Jude is pretty unisex. Would that be an option?

My dd has the name Gerasimos for her confirmation name. He is a Greek saint who we met (!) on holiday in Cephalonia.
We happened to be there for the celebration day and they parade his body through the streets in a special casket, and you can kiss his feet to stop you going mad... We tried!
NB This story is loosely told in Captain Corelli's Mandolin but we actually met the guy!

So yes, a male name should be fine.

Many many moons ago, when I was making my confirmation, the bishop said that once it was a saint's name or a biblical name, it was fine. I think they may have become more lenient on this now. My chosen name was Sarah, after my grandmother, but we were worried as there were no Saint Sarah's, but the bishop kindly told us, that not only was Sarah in the bible, she was loved by Jesus, as she had been 'barren' (infertile) and God blessed her with a child.

I would say, discuss it with priest. The fact that you are engaging in the custom is good.

Your daughter sounds like a gem btw!

A girl I went to school with took Paschal as her confirmation name. There was a Francis as well.

I took the most random name I could find - Bartolomea just to be different. My sister had a boys name.

My mum thought the priest would have a problem with my first choice of Judas...not least because he wasnt a saint

Anastasia is a saint in the Catholic tradition, but also in the orthodox and coptic traditions. She's quite interesting...(I have an Anastasia)

I have a male confirmation name, I chose st Francis of Assisi because he is patron saint on animals.
We were always told to pick a saint who's story we identified with or could relate to in some way.

DH's are Aloysius Xavier Grin, so much more interesting than his other name. I don't know whether he chose the former because he felt an affinity with the teddy bear in Brideshead.
