Do you believe in the TV mediums?

I'm never quite sure.... I want to believe but....

Colin Fry seems quite believable but then I read a critisism of his on the web the other day and a lot of it made sense, i.e: if a spirit wants to contact a person, why don't they just say who they are and who they want to talk to instead of beating around the bush with signs? John Edward, I don't believe at all, all that 'May is important in your family' and then he says '21, 22, 23rd' until they say yes?!!

What do you think?

satine: unfortunately missed this programme but have to say Derren Brown IS scary! He is an exception to every natural rule - very clever man but freaks me out, ha!
pointydog: Yes indeed, THAT is alwas the fallback argument. DH is the same, but believes in UFOs! Like he says to me "I don't have to prove/disprove what you think about mediums & you don't re UFOs" Valid point! As for the "it doesn't work for sceptics", quite the opposite! It is my understanding that Mediums actually welcome sceptics & John Edward actually says he's the biggest sceptic he knows!!

total rubbish imo. mediums play on our anxieties and hopes and fears, and make money out of it.

motherinferior · 03/01/2007 18:06

That would be a no.

And shouldn't the plural be 'media', anyway? Now TV media, that I do believe in. Watch it lots.

Am a fence sitter when it comes to this subject. Must be a low/medium level educated person according to DC's criteria. Which mediums have you met DC, are they nationally or locally known ones?

Is Tony Stockwell the psychic detective type person btw?

DominiConnor · 05/01/2007 10:44

Has a sister in law who believed this bollocks.
Met a few thgat way. Got the impression that some were well known, but I don't think nationally famous.

dc i said do you know any mediums not have you met any - there is a difference and for your information i am highly intelligent. hypothetically, of course, how would you explain intuition or instinct?......

tortoiseshell, mediums most emphatically do not play on people's anxieties. i am a medium and i do not do any such thing. i speak the truth and am honest - i relay what i hear/feel and it is up to the person i am reading for to interpret how they experience the information given.

mercy, i do believe that he is the psychic detective.

and fwiw i do not cold read:1) i don't know how. 2) if i did know, it would be an extreme abuse of my talents and would be extremely unfair on the other person.

as a matter of interest - carpenters, mechanics, teachers, etc - they must all have certain talents to be able to do what they do: should they not be paid for making a living?????????

pointydog · 06/01/2007 16:15

Of course they play on people's anxieties whether intentionally or not. On their grief, on their hopes, on their fears, on their painful desires.

They contact dead loved ones for heaven's sake.

twinkletinselpud · 06/01/2007 16:17

no they don't - i can only assume that you have had a bad experience of charlatans. point of fact, as in rl if someone you want to talk to does not want to talk to you, they will not talk to you. same goes for "dead" people. just because the bodies are dead, does not mean the spirit is.

My kids laugh at me for watching Colin Fry and John Edward, and say it's not real. As I've said to them, even if it isn't (and no-one can prove either way) if someone gets some comfort from being told their mother/ father etc who they miss very much is OK where is the harm?

I've lost my father, 4 grandparents and a large number of very well-loved great aunts and uncles in the last decade and I would love to think they are somehow aware of what is going on in my life.

fransmom · 06/01/2007 22:56

tallulah - all i can say is that people make their own decisions in what to believe. for some people, when they pass, there will be one hell of a shcok (if you pardon the pun......... )
