To wish more people would learn about my religion of wicca

I practice Wicca and as you may know, that it was the summer solstice yesterday. Im surprised how little people know about wicca and how uneducated they are about its practices and beliefs. wiccabritain.com/index.php/faq/

It's fairly niche, why should people know about it?

I know very little about Mormons, JWs, islam, Jews, Shinto, Greek Orthodox ... need I go on? Mostly because religion does not interest me.

Did you do anything special to celebrate?

Seems like quite a simplistic religion
I like it a lot.

It is simplistic but can get more complicated that page went into little detail on many things.

I celebrated by going to Stonehenge for the sunrise

Why do you wish people knew more about it?

People often think they know about my religion but are really quite ignorant of the ins and outs (as am I!)

There are loads of religions I have limited or no knowledge of.

Sorry I don't understand why you would think we would? There are an awful lot of religions, sects etc, as YAsoNBU points out.

Wow I bet that was amazing.I went to Stonehenge in the 90s for Autumn equinox although just because my friends wanted to not for religious reasons it was really good.

There are so many things in the world that matter to a small % of people. I hope you are educated in them all! :p

I think if you used the term Pagan more people would have some idea of what that entails. I identify with Paganism but as a way of life rather than labelling it as my religion. Blessed Litha ????.

I read your link and it seems to have a lot in common with Buddhism (disclaimer, there are many branches of Buddhism). What is meant by the Goddess and the horned God please? Are they symbolic of something?

I think religion/beliefs/spirituality are very personal. Do you often discuss your being Wiccan with people?

I wish more people understood it a bit more too.
I've had terrible problems trying to defend myself when people make random assumptions about what I do/don't believe even my children's school has made huge mistakes in what they think it is all about.

I read somewhere that it had only been going for a relatively short time, (see link above) - so is it more valid than other ones like Christianity? Hinduism, or Scientologists

You do what you like (so long as you are not hurting anyone else, and leave the rest of us be) IMV its fine to chat about it, in the same vein as 'i went out and did xxx' this weekend' - but not in a 'no one knows what we do' kind of way (again only my own opinion)

YANBU to wish that more people knew about your religion.

However, YABU to be disappointed that they don't, or expect that they should.

I'm not interested in any any religion, really. I don't believe in any form of deity or anything spiritual. So knowing just enough to hopefully not offend anyone who is religious (shoes off, head covered etc) is fine by me, thanks.

My town has an interfaith group and one of the people who run it is druid high priest. It was interesting to realise that Druidism and wicca are different. My impression is that old religions have a lot in common with hinduism.

you do realise you all celebrated the wrong solstice, right?

winter solstice is the turning of the earth back towards the sun and new life. summer solstice is heading for harvest and the hardship of winter. I mean, I get that you would want a good harvest but the turning of the earth away from the sun isn't the bit to get excited about.

I read recently that Stonehenge was built to mark mid-winter, rather than midsummer, and that this would have been of greater importance to the early farmers. Do you have any views or opinions on this; I find it fascinating.

I'm not Wiccan or pagan but we celebrated anyway.

And where would you say all that extra energy comes from? I realise that it's unreasonable to expect people who can't spell the word "happens" to have basic notions of physics, but I do wonder if Wiccans have heard of something called the First Law Of Thermodynamics.

Not that interested in Wicca to be honest, probably to do with my more seriously goth friends and dh's bonkers ex dabbling boring everyone with it in our youth.

However, as a first for our town, a new Pagan temple has just been created in a 16th century former chapel. Looks interesting and I might just go and find out about Odin and Frigg myself.
