I practice Wicca and as you may know, that it was the summer solstice yesterday. Im surprised how little people know about wicca and how uneducated they are about its practices and beliefs. wiccabritain.com/index.php/faq/

The link has a few grammar probs, it came up on google so linked it.

The solstice was amazing, your right about the winter solstice.

It is very much like buddism.

I find it interesting similarlies between different groups of people's beliefs, in particular similaries between myths between two groups opposite sides of the earth. For example Noah's flood is a story in lots of culture.

I don't think that Wica sees energy like physicists do. They don't need to worry about consversation of energy. Lots of cultures have an idea of karma. Personally I don't believe in the existance of karma, but I can see the appeal.

Pughug - That film scares the shit out of me! it is an absolute classic though. I have a phobia of morris men thanks to that film

CoteDAzur · 22/06/2015 15:09

"find out about Odin and Frigg"

I wonder if that's where the f-word frigging comes from Smile

CoteDAzur · 22/06/2015 15:13

"CoteDAzur - I don't think that Wica sees energy like physicists do"

Neither do they see punctuation like the rest of us do, it seems Smile

If they don't know what energy is like a physicist would, that means they are wrong about energy.

Unless they are not actually talking about real energy but some religious silliness called energy?

BunletMum · 22/06/2015 15:25

Honestly people seem to have a hard time learning about mainstream religions. While yes it would be nice for everyone to know enough about Wicca to recognise important dates, It's just a non issue for me. When people are tolerant and educated about mainstream religions then it might be time to extend to fringe religions, I don't mean that offensively at all.

specialsubject · 22/06/2015 15:47

whoever left that mess at Stonehenge is not doing their belief/group any favours at all.

AmandaWilkton · 22/06/2015 16:49

They weren't just Wiccans Druids and pagans at Stonehenge yesterday. Many Christians Muslims and atheists as well.

We also believe that the Goddess and horned God are associated with the moon waxing.

What does that mean? You know how the phases of the moon actually work, right?

AmandaWilkton · 22/06/2015 18:58

Yes I do noble

OP posts:
rogueantimatter · 22/06/2015 19:01

Could you explain the Goddess and horned God?

noblegiraffe · 22/06/2015 19:02

Then if you know how the phases of the moon actually work, where do the Goddess and horned God feature?

HermioneWeasley · 22/06/2015 19:08

Thanks, but I get enough superstition and nonsense from the main religions. I'm not looking for any more

Tequilashotfor1 · 22/06/2015 19:08

Is this the pendants corner?

cote I think your on the wrong thread.

MagicalHamSandwich · 22/06/2015 19:12

I grew up with a Wiccan mum, so even though I'm atheist I sort of identify as a cultural Wiccan in part.

But while I like a lot of the celebrations and even some of the general philosophical outlook I've always found traditional Gardnerian Wicca a bit too focussed on group structure and leadership. I'm also a bit taken aback by at least some followers' claims to centuries of tradition and whatnot. Modern paganism is demonstrably a product of the 20th century!

That having been said, of all the religions I don't believe in it's arguably still the one I mind least! Smile

CoteDAzur · 22/06/2015 19:39

"Is this the pendants corner? cote I think your on the wrong thread."

Ooh, now you are just teasing me Smile

CoteDAzur · 22/06/2015 19:41

Like noblegiraffe, I'm also curious about how you figure a horned god and a goddess have a hand in the moon waxing (and waning?) given that these are completely natural and normal phenomena, explained scientifically in every detail, and leave no place for divine intervention. From horned deities or unhorned ones.

rogueantimatter · 22/06/2015 20:10

Pendants' corner is brilliant.

CoteDAzur · 22/06/2015 20:32

I might check it out. Are there any nice silver ones? Smile

TTWK · 22/06/2015 21:40

Thanks, but I get enough superstition and nonsense from the main religions. I'm not looking for any more

^^This is the correct answer.

rogueantimatter · 22/06/2015 21:44

I wish someone on MN would discuss Buddhism with me! I started a thread but no-one replied.

Goes off crying (unskilful)

Behooven · 22/06/2015 21:45

Scary. Wicker Man I mean

KeepOnTryingTilYouRunOutOfCake · 22/06/2015 23:12

I choose not to learn about your religion and you should respect that. Practice all you like but don't fucking go on about it.

I am a Catholic, so why would i want to know about it? Its all a bit Wicker man for my liking

Have a look at some wicca / pagan practices (not just the neo pagans but the prechristians) some fascinating similarities.

Why do you think their are holy sites where there is water such as holy wells? Where did the 'Madonna and child' come from? Why are wells dressed in some places? What is the purpose of sheela na gigs? Why do you think you cross yourself with water when you enter a church?
