To just go to a jehovahs witness meeting?

One of the older women at work is a Jehovah's Witness. I don't really know what they are but they don't like blood or birthdays. I thought they were just another type of Christian but apparently not.

She keeps asking me to go to a meeting and I keep putting her off. Thinking now that I should just go once and then never again!?

It sounds really shallow but I wouldn't want to give up Christmas!!

Part of me wonders what it would be like. Would they be over friendly? Would they be distant as I am a heathen type? Can't imagine it really.

Of course you can get out of it if you do not enjoy the meeting or decide it is not for you.

JW's are not a cult. Everything will be proved to you from your own Bible.

hiddenhome · 09/04/2012 21:00

You will not find yourself trapped in a Christian church blobtobetter. Only cults trap people Sad There are Christian cults around, you need to avoid those too.

If you're looking for faith, then visit a few different mainstream churches. If you're looking for friendship/companionship then you need to look elsewhere depending upon what you're interested in.

Be careful.

Baptism will only ever be your choice (although it will be encouraged), and it cannot be forced upon you or something that happens to you accidentally.

People get baptized when they choose to, and after they can prove they understand JW beliefs quite thoroughly.

My only mistake was that I got baptized when I was 13, and thought I would believe the way I did forever.

lisad123 · 09/04/2012 21:00

Yes blob, I wasnt baptised for well over 5 years and still attended meetings and had a weekly bible study with a lovely lady who is now a very good friend.

lisad123 · 09/04/2012 21:01

It's not a cult!

hiddenhome · 09/04/2012 21:02

Your religion does not make sense calzone Hmm It is a man made religion that made up its own doctrine, is oppressive and does not adhere to Christian belief.

calzone · 09/04/2012 21:02

13 is very very young to get baptised.

hiddenhome · 09/04/2012 21:03

What are the signs of a cult lisad123?

SophieNeveau · 09/04/2012 21:03

When I went to a meeting, there were two ladies role playing. The younger one had been visiting her bible studier and discussing the meeting with the older lady, the older lady told her answers for the issues that came up in bible study, to argue with the studyier. I have read a lot of literature too, my personal opinion is that jw watchtower people have studied sociology and psychology.

WhiteShores · 09/04/2012 21:04

calzone I agree. I would be much happier if there was an age limit.

Codandchops · 09/04/2012 21:05

The Trinity explained......badly Grin

Okay take an egg!

The whole is the egg, the yolk is not the egg, the white is not the egg and the shell is not the egg but put em together and you have......an egg. (told you it was bad).

I see the Trinity in a similar way.

The Gospel of John starts with "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God....."

"And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.."

This is from a King James Bible but it says essentially the same in the Good News Bible and also in my Catholic Bible.

HerRoyalNotness · 09/04/2012 21:05

We're not trapped, we have free will. As DH likes to say, no one holds a gun to my head and makes me be there. We're not naive, we're not brainwashed. We're normal, intelligent people who want to know what the Bible says about life now and the future, and believe that the Bible is God's word. We're there to study it, meditate on it and try to live our lives by it.

I like the idea of learning more but without having to get baptised. I don't want to raise expectations and then let people down.

OP posts:
hiddenhome · 09/04/2012 21:08

Yes, jjkm a mainstream Christain would regard JW organisation as a cult.

calzone · 09/04/2012 21:09

Lots of fab apostate links there hh.

why not ask some questions and see if anyone can answer them from the Bible...

WhiteShores · 09/04/2012 21:09

HerRoyalNotness - but that is the problem. Some of us are trapped. I am. No, I do not have a gun held to my head. But I do have the loss of my entire family (whom I love, and who need me) held over my head.

Most JWs are not trapped at all, and the vast majority are quite happy, I agree. But some are trapped.

lisad123 · 09/04/2012 21:09

Not sure who the figure could be in JW religions as we have no one priest or any idols to worship. Any money donated in done via a box at the back so no one know who are what they put in the box.

calzone · 09/04/2012 21:09

Is 7 million a small amount of people?

lisad123 · 09/04/2012 21:09

And not sure 7 million would be classed as a small group.

lisad123 · 09/04/2012 21:10

Whiteshores, 13 is very young to get baptised Sad

Codandchops · 09/04/2012 21:10

FWIW the JWs I have met have been lovely. We DO differ in our beliefs but it's all sides of the same coin in my opinion. I have no problem talking to the lady who calls at my home. I don't get into too much debate with her beause she is not going to accept my belief as such and I can't agree with all of hers.

calzone · 09/04/2012 21:10

I agree with Lisa. There is no one priest and certainly no idols.

hiddenhome · 09/04/2012 21:10

You're worrying about letting people down blobtobetter? You are in a good position to be manipulated if you don't mind me saying so. Why should you worry about letting these people down? You need to carefully examine just why you want to get involved with this organisation.

Is it because they're friendly? It's fake. An act. They're just after more members. They don't care about you as an individual. Don't be taken in and deceived.
