To just go to a jehovahs witness meeting?

One of the older women at work is a Jehovah's Witness. I don't really know what they are but they don't like blood or birthdays. I thought they were just another type of Christian but apparently not.

She keeps asking me to go to a meeting and I keep putting her off. Thinking now that I should just go once and then never again!?

It sounds really shallow but I wouldn't want to give up Christmas!!

Part of me wonders what it would be like. Would they be over friendly? Would they be distant as I am a heathen type? Can't imagine it really.

I don't know the figures but the lady I work with said they are looking at sites for a new building as their congregation is now too big for their existing hall.

Then I think you will enjoy the meetings Blob. Being a witness is a way of life and they have a very close relationship with God.

It is not just a Sunday thing but a way of life and you will be welcomed at the Kingdom Hall.

I didn't realise how lost I felt until I started replying in this thread.

I have pm'ed you Blob if it helps.

Their core beliefs are listed in the link that I have just put up. It shows the differences between what they believe and the beliefs of Christianity. JWs are not Christians. They do not believe in the core beliefs of Christianity. It's like saying a washing machine is a fridge just because they're both white and belong in the kitchen. Christians and JWs are two different things.

I know pretty much nothing about Mormons other than the Fascinating Womanhood book.

JWs are not Christian

As long as you know what you're getting in to blobtobetter Sad

lisad123 · 09/04/2012 20:46

The religion is bible based and not watchtower based. The bible is hard to understand at the best of times, so they use their books and magazines to make it easier. All of them are written from the bible and the scriptures are all there for you to check.
Daily bible reading is strongly encouraged.
It is like a big family, we went to a congregation yesterday that we have never been to before. We went because we were on holiday and there was a world wide special talk yesterday that we didn't want to miss. They welcomed us, talked to us and made us feel very welcome.
There are large gatherings yearly of 1000s of JWs.

calzone · 09/04/2012 20:47

I would say their core beliefs are that there is no such thing as the Trinity. Jehovah is God, Jesus is his son and the holy spirit is his active force.

They do not believe in the soul. Ecc 9:5 says that the dead are conscious of nothing at all and there is nothing in the Bible to say that the soul floats off to heaven.

They believe in the resurrection of the dead back to earth. This has not yet happened.

That you do not go to heaven when you die. That there will be a paradise on earth and that is where most JW's want to be and only a small amount of JW's will go to heaven. Rev 14 :3 says that the 144,000 have been bought from the earth.

The command to preach which no other religion does to any extent and so regularly so maybe is supported by a higher being.

That if you actually look into all the celebrations of today you will see that they are ALL pagan! All of them including birthdays and Valentines and Easter.

Will think of more................

calzone · 09/04/2012 20:48

Surely if you believe that Jesus is God's son you are a Christian!!!

Get your facts right HH.

hiddenhome · 09/04/2012 20:49

You are a Christian if you believe in The Trinity calzone get your facts right Hmm

hiddenhome · 09/04/2012 20:49

Jesus wasn't just 'God's son' Hmm

lisad123 · 09/04/2012 20:50

Hiddenhome, interesting link but wonder why they never asked JW to show their bible based reasoning. You can pull anything online and say its truth. If you ask any JW a question they will try their hardest to answer from the bible.

hiddenhome · 09/04/2012 20:50

Read my link.

calzone · 09/04/2012 20:51

Am not sure that is right though.

To believe in Jesus means you are Christian. Not the trinity.

hiddenhome · 09/04/2012 20:51

No, they don't. The differences are plain to see. It is easy to distort The Bible.

lisad123 · 09/04/2012 20:52

here says Christians mainly believe in the trinity, not that they HAVE to.

calzone · 09/04/2012 20:53

Go on then. Ask me a question and I will see if I can answer from a JW point of view from the Bible.

WhiteShores · 09/04/2012 20:53

blobtobetter My only advice would be to always remember the implications of baptism, for you, and for any children you may have. I never want anyone else to be in the position that I am trapped in.

As long as you (and yours) remain unbaptized, you will never have to face my dilemma.

hiddenhome · 09/04/2012 20:55

Christians do not 'mainly' believe in the Trinity Hmm They believe in The Trinity. It is central to Christian belief. As central as The Resurrection which JWs don't believe in either.

blobtobetter · 09/04/2012 20:57

How involved can you get without getting baptised? Can you go to meetings / bible studies?

Whiteshores - the idea of getting into something I can't get out of is a scary one.

OP posts:
hiddenhome · 09/04/2012 20:57

JWs do not believe in The Resurrection of Jesus

calzone · 09/04/2012 20:58

But some Christians do not believe the Trinity AsItDoesNotMakeSense and JW's do believe in the Resurrection. He then spent many days in his new formed body preparing his disciples for the preaching work before he ascended to heaven.

SophieNeveau · 09/04/2012 20:59

I think once involved there would be pressure to be baptised eventually.
