Asalamalaykum!

I thought I would start a shiny, new, fresh thread for the month of Ramandhan.

In the past we have had some nice threads on here, so please use this thread to share recipes, ideas of activities for the children (or adults!), links to any websites with cool craft ideas, tales of family traditions for fasting days/Eid or anything else that you think is relevant.

And any lurkers are welcome to read and please feel welcome to ask any questions about Islam/Muslims/The Month of Ramadhan or Eid and we will try to answer as best we can.

Simple potatoe cutlets for iftar:
1)Mash boiled potatoes and add salt,black pepper,chaat masala, a few drops of lemon juice and cumin powder to it.
2) Now place small ball amount in between your palms, then press it to flatten a bit.and put a filling of finely cut coriander,mint and green chillies in the flatten part and than make small balls.
3)Now dip balls in egg and than bread crumbs and than deep fry.
You can also add a few boiled peas to potatoes........

We have been trialling 'persian' (iraqi/iranian cuisine) as I am a bit sick of the time it takes to prepare asian food, and much as I love pakoras etc. I dont think it helps with the thirst the next day (and I am to pudgy Wink

I have got dd (but not yet ds) eating 'Paneer Sabzi' which is a salad with:

White semi firm cheese
Mint
Spring onions
Walnuts
Flatbread

There is supposed to be tarraon too, but I couldnt find any. You literally make a wrap with whole mint leaves, walnuts and a smear of cheese inside the bread. She just had a portion for breakfast, at her request which has to be healthier than coco pops.

I am still working on decent saffron rice but will post my final version once I have perfected it. If anyone is in London and would like to try this out without the hassle of preparing it I thoroughly recommend behesht restaurant

Not sure I can offer any words of wisdon about the bacon eandz as ds who is the one for pushing boundaries is at nursery where the food is halal which makes life easier and dd has always taken things things very seriously and now lectures me about eating too much cake after 'healthy eating' lessons at school Shock

haha! Noah has only been exposed to kosher bacon (which is turkey bacon) at nursery but on the playground he did develop a taste for the real bacon. He will trade his crisps or wheat cookies for anything called bacon. It's like watching a dug addict! I found some good halal bacon in ealing a few weeks ago, but don't know if they deliver.

I must admit to being shocked! Mine are only allowed fresh fruit and milk as snacks at nursery and school, even raisins are NOT ALLOWED. I can't imagine crisps and bacon!

Though on a school trip they didnt lug along the government provided fruit but took a couple of packets of biscuits for the children Wink seems like they can bend the rules at will!

Well, Noah has a very long list of allergies. Feeding him is is a whole other level of complicated.

It is! It's soo very annoying. It's not too bad though. Not many children go around carrying bacon. He is known for having the best snacks to trade though.

Salaams and ramadan mubarak. Not fasting this week cos of you know what but i am wondering what to do given magriab is at 9 and i have to take dd to bed at 8.30 and remain with her all night in case she fits or stops breathing. If i try and sneak out any noise could disturb her and start her seizures.
Wht to do?

Riveninside, that sounds awful for you and your DD. You must be so worried about her. Has she been having seizures for a long time? How old is she? Poor little thing. If I were you, I'd go to sleep with a small light on every night, leave it on all night, and have your alarm on vibrate to wake you up for sehri. You could have a little sehri food box by the bedside - a bottle of water, sandwich, fruit, boiled egg, cold curry, whatever you fancy! You may not disturb her that way.

What's everyone having for sehri tomorrow? I've settled on porridge, boiled egg and an orange washed down with a pint of milk. My sister-in-law is having a full-on curry and rice feast!

A pint of milk Shock goodness me, it would take me a week to drink that!
My husband was brought up with a full on meal of curry and chappati/paratha for sehri.....fall much more into the toast and tea camp!

I am glad to see more people joining the thread though, lets see how many of us are still posting by EID.

Assalaamu alaikum everyone and Ramadan Mubarak!! We're keeping things simple this year. I, and alh my dh too, do not see the Point in slaving in the kitchen all day esp when there's no time to eat anything!! So we're having soup and dates, going to pray maghrib, then eating dinner, most of which I've prepared before Ramadan and stuck in the freezer (curries, pasta sauces,pies) so I have even less cooking to do while fasting iA. :) I don't know how many fasts I'll manage this year as I'm breast-feeding 14mo ds. But i thought id cook as much as possible far ahead for the days i do fast. I thoroughly recommend this approach, if not for this year then next. But for this year why not cook for two days at a time?

I've managed one fast so far alh. IA I hope I can do more...

it's been egg salad + lettuce + oatmeal for us too (for Sehri)

for iftar we've been keeping it to grilled meats+tonnes and tonnes of vegetables.

we're cutting out the dairy and gluten this month and have started to think about going on the 'paleo' diet.

halal bacon you say? it's turkey bacon from a halal certified butcher that looks like pork bacon but isn't. ;)

anyone want to do an mn iftar potluck?
