Does anyone here believe in spirits in the afterlife?

Saw a programme last night in which Derek Ancorah (sp?) contacted the spirit of Guy Fawkes and GF was supposedly speaking through him. I don't really believe this stuff but it makes you think. Is it real, in which case this has massive implications for the way we live our lives, or is the guy (and all other mediums) just incredible good at acting? What do you think?

no

expatinscotland · 06/11/2005 16:05

Derek Acorah is a charlatan, IMO.

spidermama · 06/11/2005 16:10

I had a very convincing experience involving my Grandmother and a medium (who only charged her bus fare by the way). My Grandmother (who was a few months away from death at the time) asked for her to come and asked for me to organise it so I did.

I wouldn't rule out anything. I don't think anyone could possibly claim to know, with any authority, about such things.

Lonelymum · 06/11/2005 16:10

Do you think it is all a huge con then? Intellectually, I do, but I wouldn't feel comfortable attending a seance or visiting a medium so I can't be totally sure that it is all bunkum.

cardQUEENcod · 06/11/2005 16:10

all bunkum an crap

Lonelymum · 06/11/2005 16:10

Cod, would you go to a seance and feel absolutely nothing, do you think?

OP posts:
Lonelymum · 06/11/2005 16:22

Spidermama, what was convincing about it?

OP posts:
cardQUEENcod · 06/11/2005 16:22

nada

aloha · 06/11/2005 16:34

No. Absolutely not.

expatinscotland · 06/11/2005 16:51

I wouldn't go to a seance. I do think there are some who have the gift of sight. But Derek definitely isn't one of them. He's annoying as all hell.

Lonelymum · 06/11/2005 16:58

So do you think he cons the people who are with him when filming takes place or do you think they are in on the act?

I am only asking because I don't believe in it but you hear stories which can be hard to explain away. Also last night, his performance as Guy Fawkes could have won him an Oscar if it was put on.

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 06/11/2005 16:59

i think the entire crew is in on his con. it's just pure entertainment and nothing else.

i don't believe he's a medium at all.

Lonelymum · 06/11/2005 17:06

But you do believe some people are? What do you mean when you say you believe some people have the gift of sight? Does that mean you think there is an after life? That souls have some sort of existence after death?

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 06/11/2005 20:45

Yeah, I believe some people are. I think there is an afterlife and souls exist after the earthly body leaves this life. But I don't believe for a second Derek is anything other than a very poor actor.

I believe. My friends dh and I went to see Colin Fry and Tony Stockwell the other week. My friend's baby was killed by a car when he was 8 mth old (went into buggy) so I wasn't hoping to hear from my sis but more for her to hear something. Anyway, I do have things/experiences happen to me so I'm very open. When Tony was on he went to a lady a row behind who's sis had died of breast cancer. Then in a nano second I knew, don't ask me how that her baby who'd now be a toddler in spirit was coming. The next thing Tony was saying he had a toddler and I told my friend it was for her. She wasn't going to take it but no one else put their hand up. Let's just say that he knew so much we were gasping and he had to ask friend not to say anything as she was wanting to tell him what he said was right etc..

HuggyBear · 06/11/2005 21:01

yes with out doubt

bonkerz · 06/11/2005 21:09

I totally belive too. Am not a religious person but the recent death of my mother has only seen to reinforce my belief in the after life. Seeing my mother in the chapel of rest st the hospital made me realise that there HAS to be something after this life.
For many years i have followed Derek Acorah and seen him live and also read his books. He has made me see things in a new light with regards the spirit world. I have been to see many psychics and clairvoyants over the years including Colin Fry and NOONE has come close to Derek. His books have helped strengthen what i belive in and are helping me to see past my mums death and know that she is in a better place.
I believe that there is a world parallel to this one. It is a place that people who have passed can live in peace with the knowledge that they can remain close to their loved ones. It means that if you are open enough you can feel and smell and sometimes touch a loved one who has passed.
How can death be the end? How can there not be anything else? I think its too easy to say all psychics ect are fake, its too easy to say ghosts are made up.

doormat · 06/11/2005 21:13

imo derek acorah was very gifted but has lost this gift of late
i do believe in the afterlife, i have seen and heard many things that i cannot explain

surfermum · 06/11/2005 21:15

I do. My in-laws are spiritualists, they're definitely not charlatans or actors, they're just a very normal Nanny and Grandad. I was sceptical when I first met them, but they've told me things that they would have had no way of knowing.

Ulysees · 06/11/2005 21:17

I've seen Derek live too but Tony Stockwell was spot on both times I've seen him. Derek was very good live too though.

HuggyBear · 06/11/2005 21:18

I think he is running a meduimship circle that i am taking part in.... think so - i will have to check

DelGirl · 06/11/2005 21:18

I think I believe in an afterlife as, like bonkerz says, how can this life just be it, there has to be more. However, I'm not convinced by Derek Acorah at all. I was when my dh 1st died but since watching John Edwards, there is no comparison. Anyone who is sceptical should watch him, he's amazing. I am prepared for people to tell me it's because i'm still grieving that I might feel this way but i've had so many expereiences since dh died that I really think there is more.

Ulysees · 06/11/2005 21:19

I'm going to an open circle at our local spiritualists church tomorrow.

HuggyBear · 06/11/2005 21:20

Im doing a circle online in about 5 mins, I really enjoy them

bonkerz · 06/11/2005 21:22

I agree that Derek has lost something more recently but i think thats alot to do with pressure put on him from everyone. There are some amazing people out there who offer an invaluable 'service'.
Grief is a strange thing and my mum only died 3 weeks ago BUT it is through Derek that i believe she may take years to come to me and then again she may never come BUT just knowing she isnt far away is a great help.
