Does anyone here believe in spirits in the afterlife?

Saw a programme last night in which Derek Ancorah (sp?) contacted the spirit of Guy Fawkes and GF was supposedly speaking through him. I don't really believe this stuff but it makes you think. Is it real, in which case this has massive implications for the way we live our lives, or is the guy (and all other mediums) just incredible good at acting? What do you think?

My mate's boyfriend came through at the spiritualist church and he hadn't been gone long. I didn't realise they could so soon? He was a very very strong character. The message came to me and I relayed it back to her and was astounded when she verified all the things I didn't know about.

Ulysees · 06/11/2005 21:26

Re: derek I 'feel' he was becoming very unhappy in that situation. Plus the swearing must've annoyed him as it's not his style. It annoys me tbh.

Callmemadam · 06/11/2005 21:36

Huggybear, please tell me what you mean about a circle online? I am a open minded sceptic but we have moved to a new house (last year) and alot of odd things are happening: e.g very very srong smells in odd rooms, like baking in the bedroom, that can be smnelt by others, not just me. Also odd voices that sound like my children but then they're not there (also heard by third party). I.m pretty sure I'm not mad, and we have no close neighbours. I still think there will be a scentific explanation, but I would love to hear what an online circleis.

HuggyBear · 06/11/2005 21:43

An online circle is pretty much the same as an online circle. In this case its a meduimship circle so, they will meet at a certain time, and run through some basic excersizes and open to spirit and then usually someone will give a reading - its really hard to explain to be honest

HuggyBear · 06/11/2005 21:45

Callmemadam - a great place to ask questions and to get good answers is MysticFamiliar which isnt the site i use but is most definatly the best one around

I am fascinated that people say "There must be an afterlife because how can death be the end?" Can someone please explain to me why death can not be the end? Is it not just that we all have an inherrent fear of death, a fear of being obliterated, or suddenly being no more, and so we invent a life for ourselves after the physical life? We are trying to give meaning and import to our lives. If human's have after lives, do other animals? Horses? cats? dogs? ants? millipedes? amoeba? Where does it stopand where does it start?

Also, if you believe your loved ones are living a parallel existence to yours and are there to guide you and support you, what happens to the spirits f people who no longer have anyone left on the physical world to guide and support? There must, by definition, be millions and millions of spirits of past people out there. What are they all doing? Is my grandmother looking down on me, and my great grandmother (whom I never knew) and my great great grandmother and so on for generations back? What are the spirits of cavemen doing right now?

I hope this doesn't sound rude to those of you who believe, but I am just trying to understand your logic. I do hear stories about people saying mediums have known things about them that no-one could possibly have known, and it makes me wonder if there is some truth in it all, but I also think it is not hard for a medium to look at someone and see they are bereaved and say "Your loved one is watching you and loves you very much and tells you you are doing a great job with the children". I mean, that could apply to anyone! Also, I am sure they get some things wrong but no-one remembers those details because they don't give them the comfort they are looking for. Is anyone prepared to say what sort of details the medium knew about them so we can judge for ourselves how good they were?

I'm not sure what I believe. And anyone who knows me will know that I am indecisiveness personified. But I did have an experience when dd was very small - not more than a couple of months old. I woke to feel/see someone looking over her cot which was at the foot of the bed. Was completely unpanicked about it and sat for while, then turned on the light. No-one there obviously but a strong sense that there had been something. I have the feeling it was one of my grandmothers. Dd was a very sick baby at this point but we didn't know that. Had this happened after we found out about her illness I would have dismissed it probably, as a figment of my imagination but at the time I didn't know that she needed 'watching over'. I haven't seen or felt anything since but I'm not really open to it as I worry that if there are good spirits there must be bad too.

bonkerz · 07/11/2005 09:44

Lonelymum,

My belief was reinforced when i went to see my mother a few hours after she had passed. What i saw was the shell of my mum. Her body was tired but the expression on her face said different. The night before my mother died she was almost incomprhendable. She couldnt talk but would say odd words and woudl reach out to grasp something that noone else could see. There were 6 of us in a small room with my mum and each of us had time to talk to mum, we all mentioned our nan and also our dad who haev both passed and each time they were mentioned we got the glint in mums eye. We kenw they had come to get her and she knew it too.

I believe that spirits live on in a parallel world but also believe that there is a place for these spirits. Some spirits move on to the better place immediately and some choose to stay in the parallel land to watch and guide loved ones. There are also the spirits who do both. Unfortunatly i also believe there are spirits who get trapped in the parallel place due to bad memories or just not being able to move on.

I started seeing Psychics when i was just 17. I used to travel from Basingstoke to Southampton to see a lady who was recommended to me. When i was 18 i went to see a lady who taped our interview. I remember leaving thinking that she hadnt really told me anything relevant and just put the tape away without much thought. I still have this tape and actually got it out a few days after my mum died. What i heard shocked me because i had not really taken in anything at the reading.
At the time i was 17 and was studying childcare. I wanted to work as a nanny and hadnt spoken to my family for 2 years after my mum chucked me out at 15! I had been living on my own and working in a well paid job for almost 18 months and had a stable relationship with a man i loved dearly.

The lady started off by telling me that the man i loved was with me out of lust! That he would be around for 5 years and would appear to be my rock but i would learn the hard way.
She also told me i would move away and get a job caring for many children and i would live in a granny annex in the roof of a large house.
She also told me that my mum would become part of my life again soon and that for 8 years we would have a strained relationship.
She also said that i had had a miscarriage and she saw miscarriages as a problem for me.

WELL: At the time i was happy and couldnt imagine any of this happening. I certainly hadnt known about being pregnant. About 6 weeks after the reading (i think) i went down with glandular fever and had to move back in with my mum as i couldnt afford my rent. I lived there for a year and then decided that i was moving to Devon to be with my brother. After 4 months of living in Devon i was offered a flat in a roof of a friends shop! About 3 months later i was offered the position of nursery manager at a nursery about 100 yards from my flat! Me and my boyfriend were still an item at this point. After 8 months of living a long distance relationship HE told me he was seeing someone else. I went on to meet someone and had a son by this man but when DS was 10 weeks old he chucked us out. My ex was my rock and helped me through a tough time and we started sleeping together again. This continued till i met my husband. My ex and i split under bad terms and he told me it was all about sex anyway!!!!
In July 2004 i had a miscarriage and again in Jan 2005! It was only at this point that i remembered a horrid thing that had happened in the bath when i was 18 and realised i had had a miscarriage before.
Then to top it all my died on 15th October 2005. ALMOST 8 years since my reading! We had had a strained relationship, sometimes not talking for months on end.

Hope this helps Lonely mum

Lonelymum · 07/11/2005 09:56

OK bonkerz, but the way I see it the psychic could have made some very good guesses there. I mean, no disrespect, but it would be a fair guess to predict that your relationship was going to break down - most relationships you make when young are based on sex and don't stand the test of time, do they? And most people emerge from a relationship breakdown feeling they have "learnt the hard way". I call that life!

Equally, if you were studying for a childcare qualification, wouldn't it be fairly likely that you would one day end up caring for lots of children?

I am not attacking you BTW and I am interested in what you were told, but I do believe that there are different ways of interpreting these things.

Did she tell you anything that you really think was completely wrong?

OP posts:
bonkerz · 07/11/2005 10:40

I totally agree with you and thats the magic of having the reading taped. I had never seen this particular psychic before and made the booking via telephone. Gave her only my first name as well. She couldnt have known i was studying childcare and i know i didnt tell her because i hardly said anything on the tape. When she told me i would move she was quite adament that it would be a village outside a large town. This stumped me cos at the time i hadnt seen my family in devon for over 8 years and was no way considering moving out of Basingstoke. The move to Devon was a decision i made one day and followed it thorugh 5 days later, no planning. I lived with my brother and his family and the offer of the flat and the job came about out of no where!

Listening to the tape again today she also picked up 4 names. These are names of my brothers and also the name of my step sister! She said we would contact her and things would be good. I hadnt thought about my step sister for years as she left when my dad did when i was 8 and she was taken into care a few months later and had been adopted. This did happen. Out of the blue when my step sister turned 18 she contacted my younger sister. We spoke a few times then she stole from my mum and we havent contacted her since! so i suppose she was wrong about that. Need to add here that i never spoke about my step sister to anyone!
There were a few things in the reading that havent come true and i havent been able to place etc but i dont think that means the psychic was a fraud. You can get good psychics and bad ones too and sometimes you need to weigh up the information years later to make that decision. At the time of the reading i didnt beleive any of it and didnt see a psychcic for years after wards but now i can place the information.

Lonelymum · 07/11/2005 11:51

I am not sure I understand the role of psychics though. Why do they tell you what is going to happen to you? All right, I know, because you ask! but what I mean is, why should they know? Who tells them? Spirits? Why do the spirits know what is going to happen? Why would they impart that information? What has that got to do with looking after people in their earthly life?

I've seen a few people over the years lonelymum. 1 woman in particular i've seen about 4 times in the last 8 years or so. When I was 32 she told me I wouldn't have a child until I was 38 due to health reasons. I wasn't with anyone at the time and although I was disappointed that she said it would be 38, I didn't think any more of it after. It's there in the background but doesn't colour your life iyswim. She also said i'd be married twice. Ok that could be said of alot of people but anyway. Well I met my DH when I was 34, he died 2 years later and 2 months after my 39th birthday I had dd. (not 38 I know but when she told me, it was a month before my birthday and I guess she was going on years) I also saw someone else shortly after dh died and she did describe him well and what he died of. She also said i'd be going on holiday to a desert??? I had no intention of doing that and didn't know anyone. Well, an old friend got in touch who i'd not seen for about 10 years, she was living in Dubai and invited me there for a holiday. This was 3 months after i'd seen the psychic. Make of it what you will. All I know is, whether it's true or not, if it brings comfort to people and doesn't harm anyone then it can only be a good thing I think.

Gem754 · 09/11/2005 16:18

Yes, I believe absolutely in an afterlife.

In answer to your question about animals Lonelymum, yes they have spirits too. I'm lucky enough to have quite alot of experiences with spirit and 3 of these involved animals.

The first was while I was working at a rescue centre. I was cleaning a kennel when out of the corner of my eye I saw a dog outside the kennels. Looked up in a panic (was completly terrified I was about to lose one of the dogs, when I saw she was transparant and reconised her as a dog my family had owned. She then disappeared. I told Mum about it on the way home (was only 14) and she told me they'd adopted this dog from this rescue centre before I was born, a fact I hadn't known before.

The next was a dog we fostered. While in our care he passed away from cancer. A couple of weeks later I was sat on the sofa at home. This dog had always had a habit of pushing his nose under my hands when he wanted to be stroked and as I was sat there I felt him doing that.

The last was very recent. The day after Dd was born our cat dissappeared. We had thought he'd gott he hump and was sulking. I was changing Dd a few days later when I thought I saw him out of the corner of my eye. I looked up and called his name, and he vanished. I thought I was going crazy but found out from a neighbour a week later that Mac (my cat) had been killed on the road and that they'd taken care of him. I'm certain that what I saw was Mac's spirit coming to say goodbye.

You may think I'm crazy (it's quite possible) but these things happen all the time.

Also in answer to your point about the amount of spirits there must be in the afterlife I personally believe reincarnation, but that's a personal belief.

sunchowder · 09/11/2005 18:14

The life force in your body leaves you when you die, whether you call this the soul or the spirit. There are so many things that we don't know, that for me it would be tough to say that there is not an afterlife or reincarnation of sorts. I do believe there is something else and that something must happen to that energy. I am open to wanting to know and understand what we can't see or hearthere is some sort of connectedness that we have that seems to be electrical also in the ways that some people become healed from sickness-it just can't really be explained, can it? To me it is similar to believing in God, having faith, being able to explain what being in love is like and if you believe you are in love. Well...now that is off my chest!!!

Liveinhope · 10/11/2005 12:26

I believe in an afterlife. I have a photo of my DGS taken just after he was born and there is an orb in this picture. I believe it is someone who was looking after my DD and DGS as DD had a very traumatic birth due to severe PE resulting in her delivering on the HDU and having a forceps delivery. I do Reiki so used Reiki on DD before delivery.

Some photos taken since of DGS also have orbs in them.

Anyway, glad whoever was looking after DD and DGS helped them both on that traumatic day.

DelGirl · 10/11/2005 12:30

I took a picture of dd yesterday and the light was shining through the door onto the wall behind her but just to the right of her there was light reflection shaped like a feather. I know it's just coincidence this time but......

yULeYSEES · 10/11/2005 12:34

Delgirl, I've been posting about my experiences and the new thing for me is feather like shapes. It used to be lights and vapours and apparently feathers are a common thing to see when spirit/angels are present.

DelGirl · 10/11/2005 12:39

yeah, it was your previous post that made me think it but I often see little white feathers around, usually on my doorstep and it makes me think of dh . Oh and butterflies too, i've had lots of those. Sat on the windowsill for ages, on my leg, come through the door (even in winter). Anyway, dd is awake now so i'd better go.

crazydazy · 10/11/2005 12:49

I totally believe in the Afterlife, I have always been open to it and have recently become more interested. My mum lent me a book Mia Dolan - the Gift and its truly the best book I have read in awhile. You just feel so happy and warm knowing that spirits are looking out for you and your loved ones.

Am going to have a look now in that mystic familiar site.

Thanks

Liveinhope · 10/11/2005 12:57

The day before my DD had DGS she was at home with labour pains. Throughout the day 2 robins sat on the lounge windowledge. Robins are meant to be spirits visiting if they come close to your home.

yULeYSEES · 10/11/2005 12:58

this site may be of interest?

Bambi posted it on my thread and I've just applied to join.

HuggyBear · 10/11/2005 13:03

I use this site now, but chat doesnt really get active until about 9pm. Friendly welcoming people and nice classes. A nhew site with alot of potential.

motheroftwoboys · 16/11/2005 14:32

Just seen this one and certainly believe there is something. I had a few experiences when I was 13 or 14. When I was in my early 20s I met the medium Doris Stokes who told me I was psychic. I have been to a clairvoyent a few times over the past 20 years and she has always staggered me with what she has told me. She describes it as watching a film play over my shoulder. She makes clients shuffle cards while she sees if she can "make a connection" and if she can't then she does a tarot reading. The first time I went I asked who the "connection" was. She replied "a cousin of your mum's who committed suicide" Ok. Next time I asked if it was her again, she said "you don't think they are all just hanging around waiting for you to turn up do you?! lol and told me (in detail) who it was that time. I have, never, ever, given her clues and twice she has told me things before I have even sat down. I know many people who have had spiritual experiences. I work in a supposedly haunted building but have never seen anything here but we have all seen poltergeist activity. True!! Also, referring to one of the earlier posts, my mum died back in february and for the last few days of her life she was always reachiing her hand up to an unseen person who seemed to be standing at her bedside. She was absolutely beaming. We wonder if it was my dad she was seeing who had just died 4 months earlier. My mum died of a broken heart - there was no other reason or explanation. There MUST be something out there. Too many things happen to too many people to explain everything away.

Baba · 17/11/2005 15:36

I am so desperate to see something that I just get really down about the whole thing. My Dad died in 2003 from cancer and as we were on the way to the hospital, after we got a call saying he was about to die, my Mum and I were in a car and there was a rainbow. I told Mum that my Dad had put that there for us. When we got there it was too late but after he died a psychic said that my Dad had sent me a rainbow. I would love to see him again and sometimes think he is with me but would love to have proof as I miss him soooo much and think he must be watching over me as I can get very depressed and unstable.

Any reason why I can't see or feel anything perhaps?
Every time I go and see a psychic or medium, I am asked if I am a healer? It sounds kind of weird but I often feel an overwhelming urge to touch or hug people and wonder if this was anything to do with it as I work in sales!!!
