I'm in a rush right now so can't give all the details, but puppies are due today and parents are tested!

Need to find out price but location is good. I'll have more details tonight

what breed, did you say what you had decided on (sorry), how exciting.

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 24/06/2010 07:51

Excellent news, look forward to all the details later!

kid · 24/06/2010 07:57

Springer spaniel
I'm late now, oh well, a puppy is far more important than DC getting to school
I really am going now though, bye!

Kid that is great news, this one sounds more promising!

beautifulgirls · 24/06/2010 10:21

Excellent news....looking forwards to hearing all the details - then we need a series of photos of course so we can all goo over the new pup as he grows up!

So pleased for you, can't wait for more news, ive got goosebumps on your behalf

kid · 24/06/2010 16:28

Right, home from work and more news to share

The dog did indeed have her pups late last night/this morning, 6 in total. As far as I know there are 5 females and 1 male.

I have the details of the dogs names, not sure how to check their test results, someone care to tell me?

They cost £575 but that includes microchipping so I guess I could spend more than I intended.

Some good news regarding money though came in the form of a letter. I just opened a letter from DD secondary school that she is starting in September. They are giving everyone a new uniform! So, that has got to have saved me loads of money, all of which can be spent on my puppy!

I haven't spoken to DH about it at all, the lady emailed me this morning after he had left. My first intinct was to post on MN! I then got an email on my way home from work to say pups had arrived safely.

Is it obvious that I am very excited?
Did I mention that today is my wedding anniversary, what super timing!

Checked distance, they are 1 hour and 43 minutes drive away. Even I could drive there if I am brave and believe me, if it means getting a healthy pup, I can be very brave!

fingers crossed it works out for you Kid

minimu1 · 24/06/2010 16:44

Fantastic

link for checking health testing of KC dogs

kid · 24/06/2010 17:04

I can't find them on that link
Can I have an email address to forward the details to that perhaps you would be kind enough to check for me?

I don't actually know what the test results should be but I know that information would be available to find online.

Or do I just post the names here?

OP posts:
beautifulgirls · 24/06/2010 19:00

The breeder should be able to give you all that information if you ask anyway. Why not give her a call and ask, then you can just post the results here for people to comment on. Personally I wouldn't put the names on a public board if they were not my own dogs just in case there are any come backs by the owner, but that is up to you.

kid · 24/06/2010 19:21

well thats what I thought, I don't want to upset anyone. I don't want anyone nicking my pup either

I thought the hard bit was finding the dog. Surely people don't pretend to have health screened dogs, do they?

I can write what I have been told and people who understand these things can comment or advise maybe?

Both dogs have had regulatory health tests (eyes: MRD, PRA and goniodysgenesis; DNA testing for PRA Cord 1 and for canine fucosidosis and are hip scored)

I don't know what the hip scores results are. I have emailed her 3 times already today, think I should wait for her to reply before hassling her anymore!

She knows I am interested in the boy pup, so hopefully she will get back to me before letting someone else have him. I hope so anyway.

Slubberdegullion · 24/06/2010 19:36

Looking good

My breeder had scanned the certificates of both parents' test results and she e-mailed them all to me when I had passed her screening . I checked them all as well when I went for my first visit. You could ask the breeder to do the same if you are concerned.

Don't be at the price. Low price was a factor in crossing litters off my list. I think you will find that litters from reputable breeders will come with a fairly high price tag and be within a certain range. All the health tests cost the breeder money and that will be reflected in the price of the puppy.

kid · 24/06/2010 20:02

I don't really mind the cost, I would like to pay a bit less but you do get what you pay for. Plus, the fact that I now don't have to pay for DD's uniform is a lovely added bonus.

What if the breeder screens me and decides I can't have a puppy?
I suppose I should worry about that when the time comes. She lives 70 miles from me which is okay I suppose, as long as DH drives!

She hasn't replied to my email yet. WHY! Just kidding, I know she will be busy and has other more important things to do other than deal with my pestering. I haven't actually pestered her too much, I replied to each of her 2 emails and then sent a third email asking what the procedure is if we decided we do want the boy pup.

I have found the hip scores of each of the dogs. Mum is 6:7=13, dad is 7:5, I assume that is good as the mean is 14. But I don't actually have a clue tbh!

OP posts:
Vallhala · 24/06/2010 20:12

Dogs should only be bred from if their hip score is considerably below the breed's average. If I recall correctly, an ESS's average for the breed is 13. So, in your case, it's looking good so far.

kid · 24/06/2010 20:17

how often should a dog be hip scored?
I did find the mum on that link above, but that gave her Hip Dysplasia 3/6 = 9, that was in 2003 and Eye Disease Unaffected in 2005.

I still can't find the dad on there, but he has a very long fancy name which I am sure doesn't have to be listed in full. I can't see a shorter version for his name! But he does have a website all about him.

OP posts:
misdee · 24/06/2010 20:22

sounds good.

i think £575 is about average price for a pup isnt it? i paid £200 for my old dog who was a cross breed.

kid · 24/06/2010 20:27

Yeah, its probably not a bad price, I am sure I read the average price for a springer is £300-£500 so just slightly higher.
We paid £350 for Moby, he was a cross breed and came from parents that had not been health screened.

I will find the money, but DH isn't sounding as excited as I am. He isn't keen on their long ears (show type) I could be really mean and tell him its ears won't be that long. I have been searching online for show springers with shorter ears, not sure he believes me though. I think a show one will be fine as they are more laid back than the working kind.

He is watching football at the moment so I won't get any sense out of him just yet.

just googled. gorgeous

midori1999 · 24/06/2010 20:50

Kid, if you want to email me at [email protected] then I can look at anything you want or just give specific advice (other than general, which is all that can really be given on a forum). Not sure if that will help further, but if it will, then feel free.

It is good that the breeder appears to be doing all the health tests. Sometimes the eye results don't appear very quickly on the KC site and might be done but not on there. Not sure about the more breed specific stuff. Hip scoring is only done once in the dogs lifetime, so slightly odd that Mum appears to have two scores, I wonder if there has been a mix up?

It sounds good so far, just make sure you ask to see copies of health test results, bizarrely, people do lie about it.

kid · 24/06/2010 20:54

Hello Midori, am just about to send you the email I got from the breeder. Thank you so much x

OP posts:
midori1999 · 24/06/2010 21:42

I've emailed you back. You're welcome!

As I said in my email, I think you'd struggle to find a better or more ethical breeder on the face of it and it is certainly someone I'd consider myself if I was in the market for a Spinger. (I do not want a Springer, I don't, I don't, I don't... really.... )

kid · 24/06/2010 22:05

Well the dog only had one boy and HE IS MINE!
Just trying to convince DH that the show type's ears are not too big!

I thought he was going to say no, but he said he hasn't said no. I have noticed he hasn't said yes either so I will need to convince him how cute the dog is and will be. I have been watching videos from the dads previous litters. I want one, I really, really do!

Midori, thank you for your advice, its has reall helped put my mind at ease. I do think this is my pup, but I won't agree until DH agrees. I'll give him an hour before I start sulking lol
