OK we have managed to survive the 2weeks wait & tomorrow is the day we get to bring our new puppy home
Any hints on helping him to settle ? I feel guilty taking him away from his mum ,
And how do i get two very excited children to sleep tonight
TIA

Don't feel quilty of taking him from his mu - he is going to have so much fun with you! She will be getting fed up with him now anyway!!

Have a quiet day today. I do not let my puppies have the run of the house just a room or two at a time - so let them settle into the room they will sleep in.

Take things slowly and just have a lovely quiet puppy watching day!

Are you crating the pup? If so drop treats in the crate and let the puppy find them - if he falls asleep gently lift him into his crate and let him fall back to sleep in there (do not shut the door in the day)
Be ready to praise like mad when he wees outside

elmofan · 09/06/2010 15:59

thanks minimu

I feel sorry for him getting taken away from his mum , but hopefully he will settle with us & not fret .
Yes i have bought a crate for him & a lovely fleece lined basket to go inside the crate & a kennel for outdoors for when he is older , a mountain of chew toys & puppy treats , blankets (which we are going to rub off his mum to get her scent on them for him ) I have also got him a lead that has a car seat belt attachment & a harness .
Children are actually counting down the hours at this stage .

Ask for one of his mums blankets, or a piece of it, this will help him settle.

Do you have children?

Try to get him settled in before they meet him, coming into a room of screaming kids can be a little overwhelming for them!

Apart from that lots of cuddles and reaasuarnce

elmofan · 09/06/2010 16:20

thanks Disenchanted3

We have a 2 hour journey to pick him up so i have given the children the day off school because i would not make it home in time to collect them from school .
Have 2 blankets to rub off his mum

Lovely. My puppy has been with us for almost 11 weeks - she is 18 weeks today and brings us so much happiness. She went swimming a few hours ago and is filthy, smelly and absolutely exhausted

elmofan · 09/06/2010 20:39

Hi oxo DD has just nodded off (at last) & ds is still full of beans lol .

Think i am just as excited as the kids if I'm honest

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 10/06/2010 15:36

How very exciting Elmo ! Looking forward to hearing lots of details very soon and I hope things have been better for your DS recently.

elmofan · 10/06/2010 17:23

Hello to everyone we picked Oscar up at 12 noon & got home around 4.30pm , He is absolutely gorgeous very placid loves to slobber lick us (covered in wet kisses) lol . He was fine in the car on the way home , sat in his basket as good as gold & when we got home dh put newspaper down outside & he ran out & did a pee & poo clever boy & is now fast asleep in his crate with the door left open & ds is gently stroking him . His breeder has gotten him used to his name for us which was a nice surprise . Fingers crossed he sleeps OK tonight .

Sorry, I've just seen your profile. Awwwwww! Bless his little socks!

Summersoon · 10/06/2010 21:22

He is so CUTE!!

What breed is he? (dog ignoramus )

I bet that your kids will not want to leave him to go to school tomorrow!

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 10/06/2010 22:17

Oh he is deliciously gorgeous ! I bet your children can't wait until the weekend.

kid · 10/06/2010 22:28

He is gorgeous

elmofan · 11/06/2010 15:47

UPDATE We are up to our knees in pee&poo

Well we let Oscar outside at 11pm to do his business we ignorantly thought he would sleep through the night peacefully lol he had us up at 12.05 which dh sat cuddling him until 2am then he slept until 5.55am i got up to him then with ds on my heels behind me . He does his wee on newspaper but goes to the back door to go out to the garden to do his poo (pretty good for an 8week old pup ) the only problem we have with him is he whines&yelps non stop if we leave the room but if i put the radio on he is fine lol . I am seriously considering leaving the radio on tonight so we can all sleep .

Slubberdegullion · 11/06/2010 15:49

awww what a cutie.

Enjoy it all now, the tiny puppy stage goes so fast.

minimu1 · 11/06/2010 17:07

I really would do away with the newspaper - expect a few nights if whinning - put on the radio, make sure he has something to cuddle up to and do not go back to him.

Is he crated?

Harden your heart and get ear plugs!

fruitshootsandheaves · 11/06/2010 17:17

Don't go down and cuddle him. It will be really hard to get him to go through the night if you do this.
Be hard and as minimu says buy ear plugs!
We had 2 nights of screaming and almost no sleep but it was worth it as on the third night he didn't make a sound (although we then lay awake for hours wondering if he was ok but not daring to go down in case we set him off!)
He has been going through the night since.

elmofan · 11/06/2010 17:55

Thanks yes he is crated & loves it in there , he will walk in & out of it during the day , i will show minimu1 & fruitshoots posts to dh when he gets in from work as he is the big softy that went down & lay beside Oscar last night until 2am Actually now that i think of it he never got up at that hour for the dc's lol .
pup is fast asleep(recharging his batteries for tonight) with his nose stuck into ds's smelly old runner not sure if he is trying to get as high as a kite to cope with his new mad family .

kid · 11/06/2010 18:27

What breed is he? You probably said but I'm too lazy to check plus I'm MNing on my iPod

on moby's first night here, he cried for 2 hours so I ended up sleeping on the settee with him. He kept trying to get milk from my furry dressing gown!
He did end up sleeping under our bed all night, every night.

elmofan · 11/06/2010 18:48

He is a springer spaniel kid
