are ginger cats ever girls?

I have heard that you don't get female ginger cats. Anyone out there able to contradict that through their own experience?

I always thought that too but when I mentioned it in conversation, our vet said you can get ginger females sometimes apparantly. I've not seen one to my knowledge though.

Our ginger cat is a boy.

We have a ginger girl. When we took her to the vet the receptionist said, "ooh, that's rare isn't it to have a ginger female?" Then she turned to the other receptionist and said, "you've got one haven't you Sandra? And Sheila's got one..."

We had a ginger female when I was a child. Now we have a ginger male. When I took to the vets the first time, the vet said "oh I better check he is male as we do sometimes get male ginger cats"...I think it just depends on what the person has seen.

Ginger cats are cool!

'Ginger cats are cool' I second that! I love all cats really, but ginger ones...there's just something about them. They saunter about as though they really do know they're extra special.

Met one today and our cat had two ginger females.

Mine is. A woman on the train once (cat was with me in a basket) insisted most vociferously she couldn't be; I had to offer her a look at the arse end before she would back down.

We had a male tortoishell at the vets I worked at once! Very rare. he was being castrated and the offending bollocks were not only tiny but still undescended so he wasn't quite 'right' as a male!

we had two as a child. Came home with these two ginger "thom" kittens and didn't discover they were female until one got into a fight and having taken it to the vet he proclaimed that he was in fact a she. A hasty trip to the vet insued with the other cat and he confirmed that she too was female. Fortunately this was discovered before either of them had had a chance to reproduce and the necessary steps could be taken. :wink:

We took in a stray pregnant ginger female when I was a child, we were always rescuing cats.
She gave birth to two ginger kittens, one male and one female.

Its 'tortoiseshell and white' cats that have to be genetically female as that particular genetic combination is encoded on the female chromosomes: you can certainly have male tortoise shell ones and female ginger ones.

What is even more interesting is the combination of genetics and embryology that produces the common markings eg mask etc and allows for sites like this

I have a female ginger cat. She was a rescue cat and I was surprised when the people at the shelter said she was a female. I took her to the vet to have her health checked out and he verified that she was indeed a girl.

I named her Debbie and she's as vicious as hell!
