just found realised my cat has been pissing all over my sofa for quite a while now!!

there has been a pissy smell in my house for weeks and weeks and i haven't been able to shift it. i have smelt everywhere in the house and could;n't find it.

this morning noticed my leather sofa was wet - smelt it and it was sodding cat piss!!

started washing with detol, stuck my hand down the back of the sofa and it is soaking wet and mouldy down there!!

i am so furious i dont want the cat any more!! well, i do cos i love him, but i am so angry with him now!!

he has already ruined my son's materess and duvet which i have had to replace and i know i will never be able to get rid of that smell on the sofa so he will continue to do it.

i cant keep him out the front room as there is only 2 rooms down stairs - front room and kitchen.

if i found him a new home i would have to rehome the other one too as they are brothers and couldn't split them up. but the other one - the one that HASN'T been pissing everywhere is my favourite.

im sure he is doing it because i already had another cat when i got these 2 (a girl) and he is marking his territory.

i dont know what to do i am at my wits end now. my previous cat before he died used to piss all over my big sofa bean bag and no matter what i put on it, bleach, dettol, tcp, he still continued to do it and in the end i had to throw the beanbag away (it cost me £120). i can not afford to replace my sofa

feel so down now

I'd make the living room a cat free zone for now - why can't the cats be shut in the kitchen at night?

they are! i keep all 3 cats in the kitchen at night then let them out for a wander when i wake up. they usually go out for the day if its not raining, and then they go in the front room and kitchen during the evening until i go to bed

get a water pistol and sit in the corner of the room armed and ready to shoot. whenever he goes near the sofa shoot at him. may not stop him marking his territory but it will stop him going on the sofa.

Have you taken him to the vet? they will be able to rule out medical problems and give behavioural advice (hopefully) A feliway diffuser may also help - its good for cats in multi-cat households. They can also give cats meds to reduce anxiety levels.

just checked out cat protection website and it said use surgical spirit which i haven't tried yet.

yes, i could stop letting them on the sofa, although they all like cuddles with me on the sofa!

dont want to sit on my sofa now. wish i could afford a new one!

I had to give my cat away for this reason-she just couldnt cop with the kids, the last straw was when she did a wee on the baby bouncer chair. Thankfully my mum took her in and she is now absolutely fine, although she will still wee on piles of soft things like towels or a dressing gown on the floor which is odd-I got to the point where I was watching her all the time and knew when she was about to wee but the more children we had the less time I could watch her-she really didnt like the kids!

he may be a bit anxious. the 2 new cats dont get on well with my other cat and as i only have a small house they cant really avoid eachother

Pepper! Our cat is the same. Kept pissing on the sofa and carpet and crapping behind the sofa. Someone told us to put pepper down and we were so desperate that we gave it a go and it has stopped. We also had our cat caged for a week with a leg injury and since that she has been much better using her litter tray.

imum, now you have said that, maybe its ds they dont like. he is 4 and although he's so gentle with them they do try to avoid him like the plague. one of them wont even come in the house in the evenings until my ds is in bed

oh i dont know what to do. i cant let them upstairs because ive had to throw one matress and duvet away and now the sofa.

do you think its more likely to be related to the other cat or my ds? i can no way get rid of my other cat as ive had her for years and she is my second baby. she HATES the other cats i dont think she would be sad to see them go

yes he was prob marking his territory from the outset when you had the other cat.

When you had the other one, was there a litter tray?

I am reading a fantastic book about cat behaviour atm, and have learnt alot about them.

I would introduce a litter tray, in the kitchen. I know it's like going backwards, but he is not going to stop trying to go there unless there is an alternative.

What is his relationship like with his brother. I have read that even if they are litter mates.sibling, they don't always keep that bond as they go into adulthood.

is there a third party that has access to your home, via cat flap?

bloody cats!

one of ours did that to a load of my books (but to be fair it was because i'd moved in on his territory and the books were on the floor)

you could cover the entire sofa in plastic during the day when you are out.
that way if you can't stop it, at least you can control the damage.

yes still have another - a girl, and the 2 brothers. the 2 boys do get on well they usually sleep together in the same bed and dont seem to have any problems. there is already a litter tray in the kitchen as there isn't a cat flap

Just normal pepper. We just got the pepper grinder out. I think the theory is that they have sensitive noses and the pepper is so strong they avoid it.

in the book I am reading, she suggests two trays for more than one cat, as they are so fussy about toileting, and like thier privacy.

It is possible to place one on route/near to the sofa, and gradually move it back over a few weeks, to the kitchen.

Covering the sofa, and policing this cat's movemements would be best.

Don't allow it into the living room. Put him out first thing, if he's in overnight. Put the second litter tray inthe kitchen at night?

My neutered male cat does this when he is upset/anxious. The last time he started doing it was just after we moved house. Now he is settled he has stopped again.

Is there anything that could be upsetting him?

DAP diffusers help, but I have always just tried to indentify the problem and deal with it. Normally by giving him lots of attention.

yeah i think il try the second litter tray.

the main thing im concerned about is the germs from the cat wee and my son as he sits on the sofa and his toys are on there all the time etc. that is why i chucked his mattres and duvet away because i couldn't get the smell out so knew the wee was still there

You need to get rid of the scent from the sofa too as it it will keep going there. Diluted wasing powder works well but there are sprays you can buy which very good too.

i really dont think i will be able to get all the smell out without chucking the sofa out. its gone actually inside the sofa down the back. when i stuck my hand down there its all damp and mouldy and stinks (yuuuuuck)

Please don't use dettol - it's toxic to cats, even when it's been rinsed away. As are any disinfectants that go cloudy in water.

Germs won't be a big problem as urine is usually sterile unless the animal has an infection.

Haven't time to read the whole thread I'm afraid but have you seen your vet to rule out any medical reason for him doing this?

Re the smell - you'll need to use a specialist odour remover from a pet shop or your vet.

Being litter mates does not make them good house mates sadly. We had terrible trouble with our neutered tom who lived with his neutered sister. All his troubles settled down totally about two days after she (sadly) dissappeared and never returned.

They used to sleep together, eat together, groom each other, hunt together... all the indications of a good relationship however it turned out that he was simply a single cat kind of cat. He is so much happier now that I sometimes cannot believe that I did not realise something was wrong before IYSWIM.

People are now increasingly realising that cats are not actually all that social and that a large portion of cats are far happier in single cat households. TBH it sound to me like the only cat who is happy right now is the brother. Of course I have no idea how you resolve the problem as getting rid of any of the cats would be a difficult solution for you.... hmm, not sure what to suggest tbh!

To get the smell out, you need Simple Solutions stain and odor remover. It really works. Someone on here reccomended it to me. Our sofa was saturated too
