there has been a pissy smell in my house for weeks and weeks and i haven't been able to shift it. i have smelt everywhere in the house and could;n't find it.

this morning noticed my leather sofa was wet - smelt it and it was sodding cat piss!!

started washing with detol, stuck my hand down the back of the sofa and it is soaking wet and mouldy down there!!

i am so furious i dont want the cat any more!! well, i do cos i love him, but i am so angry with him now!!

he has already ruined my son's materess and duvet which i have had to replace and i know i will never be able to get rid of that smell on the sofa so he will continue to do it.

i cant keep him out the front room as there is only 2 rooms down stairs - front room and kitchen.

if i found him a new home i would have to rehome the other one too as they are brothers and couldn't split them up. but the other one - the one that HASN'T been pissing everywhere is my favourite.

im sure he is doing it because i already had another cat when i got these 2 (a girl) and he is marking his territory.

i dont know what to do i am at my wits end now. my previous cat before he died used to piss all over my big sofa bean bag and no matter what i put on it, bleach, dettol, tcp, he still continued to do it and in the end i had to throw the beanbag away (it cost me £120). i can not afford to replace my sofa

feel so down now

i had to rehome one of my cats yrs ago, becuase he and my first cat just didn't get on. First cat alsp a boy was def an 'only', and was bloody miserable when we got a 2nd cat.

Bloody thing got run over shortly after anyhow.

BUT the cat he hated still lives very happily with my sis.

juicychops · 30/11/2009 13:00

Sparkly, do they sell that in supermarkets or only in pet shops? may give that a try as it doesn't seem that expensive.

We got it at Pets at Home about £7 i think and you have to saturate the area with it, then leave to dry, so much better and it smells ok

alypaly · 30/11/2009 13:03

stick moth balls down the back of your sofa. They hate the smell.mind you so do i ,but its better than cat piss.

juicychops · 30/11/2009 13:04

thats sad pirate. if i had a friend that wanted to rehome my 2 cats then i would happily give them to her just to make my first one happier and to perhaps make the other 2 happier too. but i dont know anyone and i dont particularly want to rehome them to a stranger except as a very last resort.

i already rescued them from someone who hadn't looked after them and they were in a bad condition when i got them so dont want them to have to go to someone else who i dont know as they might not look after them properly either

hypathetically, if i do end up deciding to rehome, considering what would be best for all 3 cats, would it be better to rehome both brothers together, or split them up and just rehome one of them?

i am not going to do anything rashly and i will try to get the smells out the sofa, and try to stop the pissing behaviour, but if i really cant and i need to consider rehoming, what do you think would be best?

It's a tough situation for you to be in jiucy. You want to do your best, and you did a fantastic thing by taking them in to begin with.

As they are not fighting, i would say that there is hope, if you use some of the things here.

You perhaps need to tackle each part of this problem, in turn, but in one full swoop.

Stop the access in the morning, and any other time this particular cat is in. He will have to go somewhere, so provide him with a new litter tray, and periodically put him in it.

Perhaps don't put the litter tray near the dofa, as i suggested earlier.

Buy some of that stuff Sparklyalice mentioned, and try the mothballs. Then cover the sofa somehow, so that if he does get near it he can't ruin it further.

make sure they all have 'places', they can go/escape to, like high up perches or beds.

I don't think it would harm the brothers to be seperated, if you should decide to rehome the one that's weeing.

Yet of course do try to avert the behaviour and give it a good try.

xrossed posts!!

Juicy, honestly, I would say that the best thing for all of the cats - if you did decide to rehome - would be to rehome the brothers seperatly. My gut feeling is that your cat and the piddly brother would be happier alone. The brother who is ok now is probably pretty laid back and will be happy whatever the situation, the others sound like that have more pressing needs.

Of course I am just applying my experience here so I could be wrong, as Bella and others said see a vet first and the feliway things can be great so could be worth a try too!

juicychops · 30/11/2009 13:47

thanks for your advice piratecat and everyone else too. im going to get some of that stuff sparklyalice suggested and go from there. because its such a small house its tough for them to have their own space so perhaps having 3 cats was not the best idea in the first place. i do feel i have helped them greatly though

after what you said pirate i think if i do need to rehome then i will rehome the one thats pissing and keep the other brother and hopefully he will start to get on a bit better with my other one in time!

Juicy - mothballs are also toxic to cats. In any case, you'd probably find the cat just started peeing in a different place.

Factsheet on indoor peeing and soiling from Feline Advisory Bureau:

here

If it were me I'd try a Feliway diffuser and the Simple Solution first, but keep an open mind as to possibly having to rehome one.

As other posters have said, you've done very well giving them all a home.

Hope it works out

BellaBonJovi · 30/11/2009 14:08

x post with everlong but yes, as I said earlier, assuming the vet has ruled out anything medical?

Could just take a course of AB's to sort this!

oh poor you and cat mrsjammi.

there's no way at all you can make it so as your 19month old doesn't get to it? What are you doing atm, if your ds goes to the pee corner? Can you not put up stair gate? or somehow block it off so you can put litter tray?
