Think our ddg may need to be put down this morning

What do I tell the girls? Do I tell them she may be, and risk upsetting them all day, or leave it and let them have a horrible shock when they get back from school?

I would let them go to school, perhaps mention that you're taking dogto vets cos she is v poorly but wait till tonight for more info. Let them enjoy the day, then sit them down when there is plenty of time etc and talk to them then.

i would tell them afterwards. explain to them that she was in a lot of pain so she went to sleep forever. thats what we did with out children. they made little pictures to bury with him. Just explain to them this morning that she is very poorly and that you will have to take her to the animal doctor while they are at school. That was if she is put down, they will know that shes poorly etc.

Why don't you tell them that she is/seems very ill and that you will take her to see the vet today whilst they are at school. If she does have to be put down maybe it could be tomorrow so that they can see her one last time tonight. I don't know how old your girls are so maybe this is not a suitable approach?

They're 5 and 6 and judging by the look of her I don't think she'll last till tomorrow. Would they forgive us for not being able to say goodbye?

In that case I think I would tell them it is a possibilty and let them say goodbye.

Thinking of you. Could you bury her in the garden or plant some floers etc to remember her by the girls could help. If you do tell them make sure you also tell their teachers.

Have they gone to school yet? Get them to give her a hug before they leave just 'cos she's feeling so ill. It must be really sad for you too, have you had her for a long time?

oh gosh i had to have our cat put down last year and i was in a state...sweetheart have you brought him home...can i suggest something ..make him look like he is asleep and let your children say goodbye to him as this is a chance to show them that death isnt scary.

Thank you all so much. I've kind of managed to compose myself now. Swiper, thanks so much for that. I just keep thinking how the other day I flippantly posted how I'd come down to dog sick and dog poo, without realising how ill she was. They think it was a brain haemorrige/tumour. She had no feeling left in her legs and didn't respond to light. I just can't believe how quickly she deteriorated.

We have brought her home, after a bit of a disagreement with H. I suppose he thought what he's doing at the moment would take up a large part of his morning.

AAA, I'd love to show her to the girls, but I'm not sure as I really do think they'll think it's frightening.

Our poor remaining springer looked all excited when we got back, kind of 'What's going on, then!', and now I just feel really sorry for him, with no playmate.

hugs carla.. i understand its just that i was never allowed to see anything/anyone that had died and was terrified of death. when i was 21 my dog died at my dads house and i just touched him and thought ok thats not horrible. [and was able to hold my dads hand as hed died last year] but you know your own children and you know what you want to do. take care.x

Now that H has gone, I just don't know what the best thing is for the girls. At 5 and 6, should I say she died, or should I say we had her put down? I'm sure they won't understand that.

Know loads of you, like my mum said, have had people, rather than pets, die, but I'm finding this a bit hard to cope with atm. A friend said she'd pick them up for me but I'm trying hard to understand how I can't be anything but a snivelling wreck when they arrive

I would say that she was very poorly and the vet gave her a tablet to make her go to sleep so that she didn't feel poorly anymore and that she has gone to heaven (or a similar 'happy place') with lots of other doggies and animals and that she's really happy now.

Don't be worried about them seeing you upset, it'll just show them that you all loved her to bits and that's it's ok to let it out - you can all have a big snivelly cuddle together
