The dog behind the television

He is so proud and he seems to think we just do not understand!

We are watching Beethoven's Big Break and pup keeps going and peering behind the TV and barking, then oming to me, sitting down and looking at the tv, to me, to the tv then going back and barking some more

[Sigh] I cannot work out if I am proud of his clever brain letting me know or ashamed that he still has not worked out there is no dog in/on/behind the TV

Ha- that makes it sound like Bellas' life is really ordered, doesn't it?

bella21 · 31/07/2009 10:54

And don't pull me up on my freaking apostrophe - it's my typing that sucks, not my grammar

KingCanuteIAm · 31/07/2009 12:08

Lol - I actually have no idea how apostrophes work so no way I amgoing to pull you up on it

Right, yes yelp and leave him, he follows and carries on which is why I make him sit and stay to chill out. THe problem is that he is really pushy once he starts, he will lie on the floor and wriggle round until he can get your feet or trouser legs or anything at all!

My life is really ordered - well, insofar as I only have one dog so I must be more ordered than you

Leave the room so he cannot follow - shut the door if you don't have a Bella dog gate

Long downs several times a day are good for reinforcing the idea that you are in charge.

At the moment he's following you and pestering you and a more senior dog wouldn't allow that.

You can come and watch my old bitch sort the new pup out if you want

oneopinionatedmother · 31/07/2009 12:25

diet for allergic cat - soft cooked rice & chicken (eg value fresh chkn from supermarket deboned and microwaved)? bit more hassle but have seen this diet ressurect moggys from near-death.

KingCanuteIAm · 31/07/2009 12:26

Ah yes, I know, that works well, our main challenge is this, when he starts he comes to where we are - all of us. If one of use leaves the room he re-directs to the next person...so to be able to do the yelp - leave - restrain if required thing we would all have to get up and leave the room at once, which is not easy when you have dds watching a movie, ds on computer, me trying to work.... you get the picture
If it is me who he starts on then I have to leave and I cannot leave the dc alone in a room with him.... [argh emoticon]

Hmm, well, he is in kennels for the next week or so. I think I will have to get the dc together for a concerted effort to getting this sorted out, I am sure we can manage it!

So what do you think, everyone up and out ignoring him... make him lie down as soon as he doea it... er... any other thoughts?

Oh, sorry, yes reaction is always immediate, never delayed.

oneopinionatedmother · 31/07/2009 12:26

dog is very clever for finding the 'other' dog.

KingCanuteIAm · 31/07/2009 12:27

Huh, interesting oneopinion, is that diet enough longer term though? I just wonder if it has all the things he would need in it?

OP posts:
bella21 · 31/07/2009 12:33

If it's all of you in the room chuck him out and shut the door.

Ignore any barking/howling etc.

Allow him back in once quiet. No fuss.

Chuck him out again immediately if he does it again.

Am sure you know all this already.

KingCanuteIAm · 31/07/2009 12:39

Huh, yes I do know that.... never thought to actually use it on my own dog though

THanks Bella!

I wear I am so much better with other peoples dogs than my own, when someone else asks me the answer is obvious, when it is me it is a different matter - odd!

OP posts:
bella21 · 31/07/2009 12:57

..and keep a supply of toys in the living room or wherever, so you can channel his mouthy behaviour in an acceptable way. He's high in prey drive, as you know, so it needs an outlet.

KingCanuteIAm · 31/07/2009 13:03

Actually, I think we maybe are making some progress with him.... Thinking about it, he has started picking up a toy now when he gets excited, he quite often comes in with tweety pie in his mouth when he is excited so I suppose he is getting the idea on some level - more repetition and reinforment needed though.

It is nice to see small improvements - at least I feel like it is a battle that can be won

So I take it you are not actually that much better then?
How is dd getting on with the tamiflu?

OP posts:
KingCanuteIAm · 31/07/2009 13:10

Oh yes, he has just reminded me of his other attention seeker - plopping one very large, claw encrusted, paw on you anywhere he can, if you are standing up it can be quite painful!

OP posts:
bella21 · 31/07/2009 13:35

Bless - I can just imagine him with Tweety Pie

dd fine now, pretty much. Very loud, certainly, as is ds

KingCanuteIAm · 31/07/2009 13:38

That is good news at least!

How is pet doing?

OP posts:
bella21 · 31/07/2009 13:58

Vets later.

I'll keep em crossed for you if you do same for me, okay?

KingCanuteIAm · 31/07/2009 15:06

Fingers firmly crosed here - made the scan a bit difficult though - try undoing jeans with crossed fingers

Seriously though, hope it goes well.

OP posts:
bella21 · 31/07/2009 16:34

Oh, so they did you already, did they?

Is it one of those stupid things where you have to go back another day for the results?

KingCanuteIAm · 31/07/2009 16:40

Yep and I am off on holiday now so I have to wait until I get back. Worryingly there was lots of digging around and whispering - mind you they did that to me at a baby scan before and there was nothing wrong so I am determined not to over-analyise!

Have you been to the Vet yet?

OP posts:
bella21 · 31/07/2009 16:45

Going to vet soon. Poor you. Try not to worry - easier said, I know.

I once had a CT scan on my back - like you, no immediate result. The consultant who'd watched the scan came through and placed a hand on my shoulder as I got up to go - 'Take care' he said, in a really serious voice. I had to wait weeks for the result and was convinced I was doomed but it was nowt - just pesky horse - induced damage

Are you scuba diving in the Bahamas then?

KingCanuteIAm · 31/07/2009 16:49

Lol I wish, nope hell on earth holiday with extended family at CP

Can't wait to take puppy with us next year - he will love it!

OP posts:
KingCanuteIAm · 31/07/2009 16:50

Let me know how things go later on?

OP posts:
Blondeshavemorefun · 31/07/2009 16:54

PinkTulips · 31/07/2009 16:54

had to lol at the OP.... one of our kittens sits on the coffee table protecting us from things coming out of the tv by swiping at them.

she hasn't let anything through yet

bella21 · 31/07/2009 16:55

Will keep you posted, thanks.
