my old dog keeps weeing on the floor........

what can i do?

she was doing it in the morning, but we seemed to have stopped that.
over the weekend she has done it, well 3 tiems this evenign!

take her to the vet.

She could have kidney problems. or it could just be her age.

Realistically it might just be a case of how long you're prepared to put up with it.

you are not alone.

Mine periodically craps on the carpet muscle wastage at the back (which is apparently quite common as they get older) means that she doesn't have as much control back there iyswim

Vet said realistically nothing I can do just put up with it for as long as I am prepared to.

She is happy and healthy otherwise, and as long as i leave her outside for long enough to do her thing and let her out frequently accidents are avoided where possible.

Otherwise she's very happy and healthy (she's nearly 14) so I wouldn't even contemplate having her put to sleep atm. But once she loses all dignity etc it's a decision I might have to make

it is hard isnt it.
the crapping on the carpet isnt nice. but if it is only periodically that is a different matter. sigh.
i have told myself once she starts doing that it will be a different story.

i wondered about pepper ? is that meant to be good for masking smell or persuading them not to.
on the other hand, perhaps it is just age ,

my dog goes through phases of doing this also old,nearly 14.Vet gave me some tablets that helped,can't remember what they were called but not £££ and they did help.

She seems okish wee wise now but is crapping all over the place,keep finding dollops around the place.
Like wannabe's dog she still seems ok despite sleeping all the time and only being able to walk v short distances.

Tis hard to know when to call it a day tbh.

Oh don't use pepper or anything, incontinance goes with the territory of older dogs!
It isn't her fault. Why not look on it as it is a problem for you, but not for her and just accept it?

ok, thanks for that, i just sort of wondered if she thought the carpet was the garden, now and i was tryign to take away any smell.

she has been better touch wood today,
well one mishap in the morning but nothign else all day

yesterday however i picked her up midflow, well i presume midflow, cos it was a small puddle - and put her in the garden - she managed to stop.

She should be seen by the vet - she might have a urine infection. If you can catch a fresh urine sample and take it in with you. If it is infection she can have treatment, and if it is an incontinance they she may well be able to have propalin or incurin to help her bladder control a bit more, so definately worth getting her checked out.

Fio-if your dog may be senile he/she is not doing it on purpose.

After being house trained for years our Old (15 years) English Sheepdog started doing this. Next stop was he couldn't get up. Took him to the vet who said he was blind and senile-he had to be put down & it broke our hearts. Sorry SBF.

I really think you should see a vet. It might be something totally treatable. If it is a UTI then she will be feeling really uncomfortable (ever had cystitis?) so I think if you haven't already been then please make an appointment to have her checked over.

If you are worried that the vet will tell you to have her put down, please don't. It is your decision to make, not the vet's, and you won't be pushed into it until she is ready. Only if an animal is obviously really suffering and I cannot do anything to help will I gently encourage an owner to go down that road. In which case I don't think you would want her to carry on suffering anyway.

thanks,
looked up senility and it suggests taking them out to do their business more often, that seems to be working.
she has been better all week, apart from at night/early morning - so i think it is just confusion/senility

There are meds which may help some dogs with senility, and there are meds which can pretty much cure incontinence. I'm surprised that you're OK to go on without getting her checked out though

My mum and dads dog is a 12 year old dalmation. She had a period of having accidents, but they took her to the vet and she was treated (not sure what with though) but she has been find for about a month. x
