Again, you need to see a vet. Retching in an older dog could be caused by a number of things. It is impossible to diagnose over the web, and it is also impossible to be able to give a broad overview of your dog's general health without examining her.

What you describe are symptoms I have sometimes seen in old, very sick dogs who are truly near the end, and sometimes also found in old dogs which are otherwise very well. In the latter case it is often possible to treat with medication and really help the dog to have a good quality of life - which is paramount.

The bottom line is that you need to be seeking advice on her from a professional who can examine her, not via the net or Google. Sorry I can't be of more help.

poor girl. get her to the vet asap

ScareyBitchFeast · 15/10/2008 22:23

of course i am scared the what the vet will suggest
but as has been said here, it is ultimately my decision

My dog now 15yrs has also had phases of peeing on the carpet... each time it happens again we get a wee sample to the vet and they send it off for testing. The last few times it's turned out to be a Urinary Tract Infection caused by ecoli in his gut... in fact another sample went into the vet last week and we're waiting on the results. He's resistant to a couple of antibiotics & I don't know how much longer it'll be before he becomes resistant them all. Unfortunately he seems to pick up UTI's about twice a year now for past couple of years.

He sometimes retches up foamy yellow bile... but this usually has no connection with the UTI's... it's when he's gone off his food and really needs to eat something.

Is the coughing at the same time as the retching?

ScareyBitchFeast · 15/10/2008 22:26

i think so, i noticed retchign first, then more recently coughing.

I also agree with everyone... visit the vet as soon as you can..

ScareyBitchFeast · 15/10/2008 22:27

not really bile, just dry retching.

My friend's 12 year old king charles spaniel does it too. She took her to the vet and now has some sort of medicine every day, it works, cos weeing has stopped.

ScareyBitchFeast · 15/10/2008 22:30

thanks all

scarey you have got to take responsibility here. your dog is not doing well and you must help her to improve. or not. i know it is daunting but is what you took on.

bugger the vet receptionist for a start, your dog deserves respect for age and you can assert for her.

ScareyBitchFeast · 16/10/2008 19:46

possibly kennel cough, on antibiotics now
weeing is just old age, though there is a pill to make her slightly "brighter",
am happy that she is on antibiotics and so the kennel cough will improve we can live with the weeing
