What should we name our cat?

Hi there! What do you think we should name our new cat?

We have adopted her and will be bringing her home in a few days. She is currently in foster, but on meeting her she was a confident little thing. Very gentle and affectionate, inquisitive and a little cheeky!

Sadly she was rescued from a situation that had got out of hand. She was unspayed and had kittens when she was still a kitten herself. She has done a fantastic job at raising them, and all of her kittens have now been rehomed. She is resilient and loving, with a streak of sass!

The names we are considering are:

Gwen
Daphne
Mavis
Josephine (Josie)

Which is your favourite, or do you have any other suggestions?

Thank you!

Mabel? Maybelle

Needanadultgapyear · 01/06/2025 08:08

Gwen I think - my rescue girls are Mavis and Mildred.

Elsa from the lion in the Born Free film? Enjoy your new cat - a home is complete without one😽

Pinkmagic1 · 01/06/2025 08:12

I like Gwen

Be4thedawn · 01/06/2025 08:14

What a beauty 😻 They're all lovely names, I'd go for Mavis out of them I think. Here's to many happy years with her

GrumpySparkler · 01/06/2025 08:17

I like Daphne the best from your list.
But she looks like a Zelda to me.

TroysMammy · 01/06/2025 08:18

Daphne without a shadow of a doubt. If I had a female cat then that is the name I'd choose as a nod to Daphne in Scooby Doo.

MoistVonL · 01/06/2025 08:20

Josie and the Pussycats cane to mind with your photo (showing my age)

TippyTapTappyStomp · 01/06/2025 08:20

Ooh, love Zelda, it suits her.
I love Mavis too, and all of your names. Josie sounds the softest and for that reason prefer the others for this tough little cookie.
Congrats! 🐱

Pissoffhairylegs · 01/06/2025 08:21

I’d call her Flo (Florence on a Sunday)

Kiki321 · 01/06/2025 08:32

Thanks so much for all of your responses, and for some great suggestions too. I have also just thought of Eliza as a potential name for her... ?

Fenella.
I can't explain why.

MrsSkylerWhite · 01/06/2025 08:38

She is gorgeous, what a beautiful little thing.

Uzuri (Beauty in Swahili, because she looks like a little lioness)

AndyouWILLATONE · 01/06/2025 08:39

That's a Daphne I'd say!

1984Winston · 01/06/2025 08:43

I have a Daphne cat so slightly biased but love the name, I think she suits Josie though!

Incredibly large number of cars called Elsa out there. Never yet meet a Gwen.

Kiki321 · 01/06/2025 09:18

I keep coming back to Gwen. Not sure why. We might have to spend a couple of days with her before making a final decision though.

Any further suggestions are very welcome!

She's so cute! My rescue girl also gave birth at about 6 months. She was an owner surrender to Cats Protection and her kitten was adopted before I got her. I like Gwen out of the names. I know a dog called Gweni and it really suits her.

i like Gwen
or Delia

SoScarletItWas · 01/06/2025 09:23

Is she your first cat, OP? Either way, the rules of Cat Names are:

The given name is only used on the vet record and to tell them off.

A two-syllable name is best for telling off as you can put proper emphasis on the second.

They will ignore this, anyway.

Whatever you name her will mutate. Gwen will become Gwennie, Gwenster, The Gwenonator, Princess Poop Pants, Gwendolyn (for Sundays), but most often Gerroutofthereyoulittleshit

She looks like a Winnie to me, anyway. Super sassy face.

EleanorReally · 01/06/2025 09:24

or Wendy

EleanorReally · 01/06/2025 09:24

i agree with two syllables

CharlotteRumpling · 01/06/2025 09:32

You need a name ending in a vowel so you can call her. Course she won't answer!

Christmashatglee · 01/06/2025 09:38

Emmie as she has such beautiful emerald green eyes. Or Cleo for no real reason other than that’s what sprang to mind when looking at her photo.

Possibly because her outline is very much like cats depicted in Egyptian scrolls, paintings, particularly those ears. So Cleopatra?
