How much longer might he live for?! We love him but I can't believe he's still going, doesn't seem to be fading either 🙈😂. I thought a 2 year commitment was what I signed up for and here we are, 37 months later....

My record was a 5 year old gerbil, Squeak. What a girl!

BeachRide · 29/07/2024 21:40

Oh, and the goldfish I offered palliative care to who wasn't expected to last a week ... lived for 15 years, the bastard 😀

Willyoushutthefrontdoor · 29/07/2024 21:43

I hear you. I adopted 2 guinea pigs. I say adopted...someone bought them off a friend and tried to sell them on within a week for more money...and hadn't even paid my friend. I was more upfront than said friend so I went down and took them back for her, and ended up with them...7 years ago! Lifespan 5-6 yrs. Philippe passed away 3 yrs ago. Albert, the other is still going very strong! He is lovely bless him and I will be sad when he goes to piggy heaven but he doesn't half take up space in our little dining room and still looks like he has loads of life in him!

WetBandits · 29/07/2024 21:43

My boy made it to 3.5! I got him from Pets at Home after absolutely not going there for a hamster. I was buying cat litter and a woman was surrendering him at the desk as he was almost 3 and her daughter was bored with him 🥺 took him home there and then! Had just over 6 months with him and he was the most gorgeous, affectionate little ham I’ve ever had.

Please give him extra loves for his twilight months!

15 years!!! U need to set yourself up in business as a longevity specialist 😄 ❤️

violetcuriosity · 29/07/2024 21:50

Awwww these stories have just made me smile 😊. He now lives on the upstairs landing because the toddler is too handsy in the living room and he's too noisy for the older kids bedrooms so he's in the way, all the time! He is so tame and friendly but I'm just done to be honest 🙈 He has daily runs and cuddles and is fed a lovely diet but I just hate the idea of him living alone in his cage bless him. Surely he won't live another year 🤣 he's famous amongst all my friends because he escaped for 9 days last year and we all thought that was it, the day I was going to put the cage in the bin I bloody found him back inside eating out of his bowl the little shit! Xx

We had a bunny who lived for more than 13 years. If they're well looked after, pets can live considerably longer than the average.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 29/07/2024 21:54

They drive you mad but you will miss him when he's gone. I'm betting within 6 months of him crossing the rainbow bridge your missing that little nibble sound coming from the cage and the rustle of pottering around......

TheSecretIsland · 29/07/2024 21:54

As a child my hamster lived in the wall cavity of our house for 18 months. We could hear him scurrying around and had no idea how he got in and out.

My mum forbade us to feed him thinking that he'd either work his way out or die (I think she was hoping for the latter)
Both my dad and I, unknown to each other, used to leave out food and water for him. When we finally caught him he was the fattest little hamster imaginable.

TheSecretIsland · 29/07/2024 21:56

Sorry op, no help, just made me reminisce.

He lived until he was over three. You will miss him, no matter how in the way he is .

Mine got into the walls once! Came out in the bathroom at the cupboard by the toilet. Oh I was relieved!!!!

And op if it's a boy he's perfectly happy on his own, they're solitary animals in the wild x

violetcuriosity · 29/07/2024 21:58

Oh god these have just given me a tear in my eye. We've been lucky to have a good run with him, you're right. The poster who had the hamster living in the walls for 18 months- omg 🤣🤣😂😂. That's hilarious. When ours came back he had an evil look in his eye for about a month, he'd seen life on the road and was a changed man 🤣

If it makes you feel any better, a friend of a friend has a 22-year-old chinchilla. Apparently, she didn’t realise they could live that long (neither did I) and I think she’s a bit tired of the commitment.

ThePure · 29/07/2024 22:03

One of ours was found deceased completely by surprise one day aged around two. The other one lasted another 6 months and did appear a bit thin and scraggy in the last few weeks before she died.

She used to go on regular walkabouts but always went back to her cage eventually. She once made a nest in DDs Barbie castle and she often used to steal little Playmobil pieces and Lego and take them back to her cage.

I love hamsters. They are about the level of pet commitment that I can manage. Now we have a dog. That's a whole other world of pain. Whatever you do stick to hamsters.

Survivingnotthriving24 · 29/07/2024 22:12

We had one when we were little that lived to between 4 and 5. We were its second owners, the first said they'd had it for around 2 years and we had it for over 3. I've only just found out how unusual that is, he was a great wee thing though!

Fluufer · 29/07/2024 22:24

My brother had a massive black hamster that lived to be 5. We spent years expecting him to die any day now 😅

Superworm24 · 29/07/2024 22:26

I won a goldfish in a bag from the fair as a child and it lived for well over 10 years. No idea how as I had it in a tiny tank without a proper filter. I feel so guilty about it now.

Moonlightdust · 29/07/2024 22:27

One of our childhood hamsters nearly made it to 4 years old! I’ve had many hammies over the years. Coincidentally perhaps the male long haired ones lived the longest!

My mam, SIL and myself once won 12 goldfish at the yearly fair. Getting them home on the bus was fun. They lived very happily in an outdoor pond in NE England for yeeaarrsss. They grew huge!

Redrocky · 29/07/2024 22:31

We had a school hamster that seemed to go on forever. I'm sure parents replaced him when he went on their watch 😆

MoonlightMedicine · 29/07/2024 22:32

I had a hamster that had to be PTS with dementia and arthritis at the age of SEVEN! The vet said it was probably a world record.

Interesting. My ancient hamster was male and long-haired!

MulberryMoon · 29/07/2024 22:34

I had a hamster that lived over 3 years too. Every time I cut up veg for dinner I gave him some and he did very well on it.

ineedtogwtoutbeforeitatoohot · 29/07/2024 22:36

3 years was the max we got a hamster to live my daughter idolised it It had a stroke and was just turning Round in circles all the time The vet put him to sleep and my daughter was so upset.
