How much longer might he live for?! We love him but I can't believe he's still going, doesn't seem to be fading either 🙈😂. I thought a 2 year commitment was what I signed up for and here we are, 37 months later....

My mam, SIL and myself once won 12 goldfish at the yearly fair. Getting them home on the bus was fun. They lived very happily in an outdoor pond in NE England for yeeaarrsss. They grew huge!

It was such a different time. Imagine seeing that on the bus now?! It sounds like yours lived a far happier life than my one.

Oh, and the goldfish I offered palliative care to who wasn't expected to last a week ... lived for 15 years, the bastard 😀

This is triggering. We have The Last Fish. A neon tetra we have been keeping in torturous isolation for at least 18 months. Bloody thing seems to thrive on it, while we worry that they are going to call us up in front of some kind of tribunal, but also that if we replaced its' mates, Last Fish would die tomorrow and the whole awful cycle would begin again.

We have a geriatric hamster, I keep thinking he'll die but last night he was very busy sorting out his cage!

I think he's 2 and a half but he's one of the little dwarf hamsters (I think they generally die younger than the bigger ones?)

The water was sloshing all over the place. I'm not even sure The Hoppings, as it's called, gives fish away any more. Mam looked after them really well. When my time came to look after fish, Bellamy and Shearer didn't live past 6 months when my son was small 😬

Are you sure it was the same one?
I have heard of 'replacements' being sneaked in to avoid any distress within a family. 🤔

Our last hammie "Dusty" was well into his fourth year when he eventually succumbed. He literally sat up on his bottom and fell over. It was a very hot day, which may have been a contributing factor. I tucked him in his bed and popped him in the garage which was cool and quiet and he died that day.

8 year old guinea was found in his cage early one morning in a bad way. DD took him on her lap and he died very quickly. She dealt with it really well actually.

I looked after that little sod every day for 15 years. By the end he was stark white with cloudy eyes - he didn't even die naturally, I had to have him put down! Cheers to The Fish Who Wouldn't Die: Bruce Wine

This is a standard age for a looked after goldfish they can live up to 40 ish.
My oldest is 22, we got him when we got married. It really annoys me when people think they are a short term commitment.

I know they can live that long, it was the fact he was on his last legs (fins?) when I took him on!

My grandfather bought a tortoise in 1979. It was an adult, that's all he knew. GF died in 1990. The tortoise is now living with his third generation of my family.
