Tax relief for pet owners

LassinSurrey · 26/07/2024 20:52

Many pet owners are struggling with the increasing costs of pet food and vets bill. The physical and mental benefits of pet ownership for adults and children are well documented.

Many pet owners are resorting to abandoning their beloved pets. It is not fair.

Please join us to ask government to provide tax relief for pet owners.

Thank you

Tax relief for pet owners

Pets aren't an essential so why should you get tax relief?

Overtheatlantic · 02/08/2024 13:38

No. I really don’t want the government in my life anymore than it is. I’ll take care of my own pets.

Dusta · 02/08/2024 13:40

making animals more affordable? Come on now. It’s a double edged sword making animals affordable to those who probably shouldn’t have pets in the first place

yeesh · 02/08/2024 13:41

Grow up

VerySadCase · 02/08/2024 13:43

Surely pet ownership is a lifestyle choice? I'm not sure why you would expect tax relief for it, and especially not when we have a massive hole in our national finances.

Yes, owning pets might have some health benefits for some individuals but so do lots of things. I would scrap the two-child cap on benefits long before I would even consider looking at something like this. When there are families that can't afford to feed their children, it's taking the piss to ask for state support for people's pets.

ShiteRider · 02/08/2024 13:43

Absolutely not.

Basic things like equipment and support for people with disabilities are having to be provided by charities because there’s no public funds to pay for it.

Trying to get out of paying tax on something which is a luxury is ridiculous.

usernother · 02/08/2024 14:35

No thank you.

lovelyhat · 02/08/2024 14:36

You must be joking!

Absolutely this. If we need the government to do anything it would be to make neutering mandatory and to subsidise the cost of it for low income owners.

UpUpUpU · 02/08/2024 14:38

Is this a joke OP? I used to work with a woman who took in stray cats. She couldn’t afford to keep them so constantly had a gofundme page or Amazon wish list for her ‘rescues’

BeerForMyHorses · 02/08/2024 14:38

Don't be ridiculous

user6876577657 · 02/08/2024 14:41

Honestly OP this is ridiculous. The last thing we need is to encourage pet ownership amongst the who can't really afford it. Can you not see that this would exacerbate the problem.

many pets also have a large carbon footprint.

Really stupid idea.

Friday 2 August, not April 1

halava · 02/08/2024 14:43

A tax for OWNING pets would be brilliant though. Might pay for cleaning up the shit they leave on our pavements etc.

This

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 02/08/2024 15:00

No, absolutely not.

Pets are a choice. I have cats myself, one is old and costing a fortune in medical fees (even with insurance) but no way would I expect the tax payer to fund my animals by giving us tax breaks for owning them.

oneleggedspider · 02/08/2024 15:05

Pet insurance should be mandatory before anyone is allowed to own a pet. I'm fed up with people whinging about the cost of pet bills when they haven't even signed up to a basic insurance policy.

That being said, vet fees should be monitored to make sure they're not taking the piss.

Giving pet owners tax relief would just mean everyone suddenly getting a hamster/ goldfish in order to take advantage of it. 😅

Piuy · 02/08/2024 15:06

Huh?

As a disabled person who had multiple pets...why? It's my choice to have them, I don't get this at all.

EdithStourton · 02/08/2024 15:06

Don't be daft.
And I say that as someone who has lived with dogs for most of her life.

Lacdulancelot · 02/08/2024 15:07

😂 😂 😂

Sandyankles · 02/08/2024 15:11

No way! As others have said far better to tax animal ownership and discourage irresponsible owners who take on pets without being able to afford them.

DancelikeFredAstaire · 02/08/2024 15:14

Nope. If anything there should be a tax on owning pets especially dogs....it may make people think twice before getting one.

KnickerlessParsons · 02/08/2024 15:14

You surely have to be joking?!! 😮
Child benefit - yes. Because the govt needs people to have children.
Pet benefit - absolutely not. If you can't afford a pet don't get a pet.

listsandbudgets · 02/08/2024 15:18

Nonsense. We've got a dog and two cats and I wouldn't dream of expecting the public purse to subsidise them. The only exception I'd agree with might be for properly registered service dogs... guide dogs, hearing dogs etc.

What i would like to see however is a review of vets fees and products because it's now astronomical

If only they would find a way of enforcing the rules in place. I'm constantly picking up the shit from other dogs. I pick up my dogs but always carry extra bags because you can be almost certain some inconsiderate, digusting, vile, low life dog owner hasn't picked up theirs
