Hello everyone. I’m a bit of a paranoid person when it comes to my kids and I’ve even phoned 111 about this and got no further forward. A couple of hours ago I was cleaning my hamsters cage and my 2 year old grabbed the hamsters water bottle and put his mouth on it pretending to drink from it (some water probably came out too!) I got it off him after a couple of seconds but I’m now terrified he could have been passed a disease since hamsters are still rodents! My hamster is healthy and fine but after googling it still says it can happen. Has anyone’s LO done this before? I’m absolutely terrified. Yes I know it’s a bit extreme sorry xx

Mine once ate his own poo. They're basically programmed to be gross. He'll be fine

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 04/07/2024 15:23

My daughter once put a slug in her mouth.
Another put goose poo in her mouth.
I did go into major panic mode though. Both are fine. Not even so much as a bad tummy.

This must be why I waited 45 mins to get through to 111 this morning ...

vodkaredbullgirl · 04/07/2024 15:25

Sorry had to laugh at him, trying to drink from the hamster bottle. He will be fine you are overacting.

SirChenjins · 04/07/2024 15:26

If that is the worst thing your 2 year old has put in his mouth thus far you’ve got off lightly. He will be fine.

Geiyotue · 04/07/2024 15:28

He will be fine. My cat and I basically share a glass of water that I keep by my bed, I often wake up to him with his face in it. It's amazing what our bodies can cope with in terms of germs.

Mine once drank the liquid inside of a freezer pack. He's still alive!

CrispEater2000 · 04/07/2024 15:36

My brother used to pretend to be a dog and drink out of puddles in the street. I'd like to say he's fine but a brain parasite might explain his behaviour for the past 35 years.

sunshinechaser · 04/07/2024 15:36

Totally fine. My DS once ate a piece of sweetcorn that was in his poo when I was changing his nappy 🤮 He was fine!

Simonjt · 04/07/2024 15:36

Don’t worry, our two year old recently drank from a trough at a farm park, there was a fair amount of cow poo in it.

ewww lol

My two year old likes to pour his water onto the floor so that he can lick it like a dog 🤷‍♀️ he is very fast at this because he knows if an adult sees him they will stop him from doing it.

I think your toddler will be fine. If hamsters carried human-communicable diseases they would not be such popular pets. It is only wild animals which usually carry disease.

dotcombubble · 04/07/2024 15:40

Doing stuff like this is how their immune system develops.

Well since I didn't call this morning seems like that's impossible right? Thanks for your very valuable comment though!

They will be fine OP. If it makes you feel better I may have accidentally made DS's sandwich with a knife that cleaned out the bird feeder this morning. DH couldn't remember if it had been in the dishwasher. He seems fine so far.

MumChp · 04/07/2024 17:01

My children have done worse. All 3 still alive.

ginasevern · 04/07/2024 17:24

Long (ish) story but my son once had a very hearty glug of cheetah water. Yes, the big fuck off cat type cheetah. He survived and cheetah water is now a family joke.

MrsMoastyToasty · 04/07/2024 17:46

I ate a bumble bee. I survived.

KnittedCardi · 04/07/2024 18:04

I'm amazed he's got to two without ingesting anything revolting so far.

DD's various habits: sucking the cats tail, licking the cat, eating the cats food. Eating dirt, sucking stones and pebbles, particularly abroad, oh and sand. Woodlice. Poisonous berries...... That was the only one I worried about, and took her to the doctors.

gingercat02 · 04/07/2024 18:05

My brother ate a worm at 2. We had a cat who drank out of any water glass he could get to.
We're all still alive (apart from the cat, but he was 19)

HarrietJonesFlydaleNorth · 04/07/2024 18:52

One 2yo fell face first into the muddy chicken poo slurry that was at the end of our garden.

The other 2yo was found hugging a floppy dead pigeon to his face and crooning that it was 'Soooo soft!'.

They've both survived to teenage years at least!

rainbowsparkle28 · 04/07/2024 18:59

In the most gentle way possible - they will be fine!
