Hello everyone. I’m a bit of a paranoid person when it comes to my kids and I’ve even phoned 111 about this and got no further forward. A couple of hours ago I was cleaning my hamsters cage and my 2 year old grabbed the hamsters water bottle and put his mouth on it pretending to drink from it (some water probably came out too!) I got it off him after a couple of seconds but I’m now terrified he could have been passed a disease since hamsters are still rodents! My hamster is healthy and fine but after googling it still says it can happen. Has anyone’s LO done this before? I’m absolutely terrified. Yes I know it’s a bit extreme sorry xx

Look I’m only saying this to help you feel better.
i have a 4yo with severe learning disability and PICA. You would honestly gag at some of the things he manages to eat/drink. It’s a frequent occurrence because he’s just relentless and he’s honestly as healthy as an ox still.

I’m very often shocked stuff doesn’t make him sick tbh. I’m very uptight so it’s been a nightmare for me to adjust to.

seriously… he will lay on the floor or public toilets and lick them. It’s AWFUL

He'll be fine. Give it a good wipe though so the hamster doesn't pick up anything.

Icannoteven · 04/07/2024 19:15

😂 bless. I once found my 2 year old scooping water out of the toilet with her shoe and drinking from it 🤷‍♀️

spsy · 04/07/2024 19:18

He will be absolutely fine, he pretend drank it but even if he guzzled it nothing will happen. You will look back and laugh in a couple of years at the pfb behaviour, take a deep breath and don’t worry.

When I was about 8 or 9 I had a sleepover at a friends. I woke up in the dead of night bursting for a drink but didn’t want to wake everyone and go make one in the kitchen like a normal person. So like any sane and rational thinking 8 year old would do I proceeded to chug on her pet lizards water supply - downed the lot and went back to sleep. 25 years later and I’m still standing.

kids do worry us but I’m sure he’ll be fine. Just keep an extra eye on him if it makes you feel better.

I hope the lizard didn't die of dehydration!

Calling 111 for an incident like this is at the extreme end of what most people consider 'normal'. Do you normally experience such extreme reactions? It seems to be at the stage for you where pretty run of the mill experiences with toddlers are provoking severe anxiety, to the point where it hindering your ability to go about your life normally and allow your toddler to do the same. I would suggest some therapy with a therapist whose specialist area is anxiety and health anxiety.

Wonderful commentary on here!

The hamster lives in a cage in your house, where do you think it might have got diseases from?

JC03745 · 09/07/2024 17:05

What support are you having for your anxiety OP?

iamaigenerated · 09/07/2024 17:22

It's fine. Some kids kiss hamsters on the lips. Some adults too though god knows why.

Victoriancat · 09/07/2024 17:23

Drama llama.

TheCultureHusks · 09/07/2024 17:23

Don’t worry! Just apologise to the hamster, it won’t affect their relationship

HoHoHoliday · 09/07/2024 17:26

Your hamster will be pretty clean! It lives in your house and you clean up after it. Your son will be fine. My brother once chewed on a toilet brush!

elledee412 · 09/07/2024 17:31

FWIW, a good friend of mine used to regularly eat playground sand, which is approximately a thousand times grosser than any hamster in my estimation. She’s 31 now and about to have a baby herself.

Kids are gross little creatures - that’s why they have to be cute to survive 😅

Thirstysue · 09/07/2024 17:32

As if 111 aren't busy enough....

Well since I didn't call this morning seems like that's impossible right? Thanks for your very valuable comment though!

Pretty sure she was joking…

To be fair to the Rodenty One they are a domestic pet not a wild rat hoaching with ticks/fleas/Weils Disease ridden piss .

I kept guinea-pigs as a kid , my DD and I kept them when she was a kid . She shared apples and veg with her piggies .
They were more at risk from her than she was from them.

Your son will be fine !

Mh67 · 09/07/2024 23:21

he will be fine. you should see what children with pica digest on a daily basis.

Bettedaviseyes111 · 09/07/2024 23:33

Try not to worry kids do weird stuff he will be fine. I always think it’s probably good for their immune system.
