Anyone think three cats is manageable?

We have two sibling cats. They get on. They're 2. We'd like to add a third boy. We also have two dogs. We have plenty of room and money is not an issue they are all insured and on pet plan. My worries are whether a third (kitten) could upset the dynamic? Anyone regret getting three? Is it excessive? We love all our pets.

With two cats and two dogs, I would not get a third, just in order to not upset the dynamics. It could be fine but it’s a bit risky and could make your existing cats unhappy.

Rainbowsandrainclouds1 · 29/08/2023 18:29

I have three. We dont have children.

We had 2 siblings and then took in a stray kitten. The youngest is the most hardwork cat I ever known (super smart, in to everythjng and really demanding) I find having three tricky but thats because hes such a pain in the arse. If he was like the older two it would be fine.

Ichabodandme · 29/08/2023 18:33

For us it worked. We had 2 males initially, different litter and 6 months apart and then a male stray turned up who after several months moved himself in 😁

I won’t say that it was all plain sailing and there were certainly some teething problems but 10 years later they all got on pretty well. We sadly lost the stray last year and it seems very quiet now with only 2 but I wouldn’t change the dynamics.

I’ve got three. Third one was originally a foster but my boy cat (who used to hate everyone and everything) decided that we had got her just for him and that she absolutely had to stay. He spends half his time grooming and cuddling her and has turned into a totally different boy since becoming a dad 😂

Purplecatshopaholic · 29/08/2023 18:38

I have three. Have had four. Different ages. No real issues once they get used to each other. I have dogs too.

TheHopefulMum · 29/08/2023 18:39

At one point we had 5 dogs and 3 cats plus the children. No issues here, they all got on great.

DRS1970 · 29/08/2023 18:41

3 cats, no children, and no other pets. We get on ok, but do find catteries expensive when we go away. Can't think of any other negatives really.

AnnaMagnani · 29/08/2023 18:43

3 cats is manageable but your dynamic is not one where I would add a third, and definitely not a kitten.

You have 2 cats who are just at the age where they start being a lot less interested in each other and just want to live their own lives.

They are too old to be massively excited about a kitten and play with it, they are more likely to be pissed off.

The poor kitten is going to be on it's own without a playmate.

For me it would be a no.

Chenford · 29/08/2023 18:48

We have 6…

NeverDropYourMooncup · 29/08/2023 18:51

In as much as any kitten is manageable (surely it's the point that they're not?), and because you already have dogs he can form allegiances with if the two siblings don't appreciate him, yes, of course it's manageable.

Assuming you already got rid of net curtains, things on shelves and sleep like the dead through 3am zoomies, that is.

Panpastels · 29/08/2023 18:51

We have 6 cats and a dog. Some don't like each other but we have lots of areas where they can get away from each other and a catio.

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 30/08/2023 23:41

We have three cats and a dog - they all get on fine and nobody ever fights.

koty · 01/09/2023 08:56

Ja posiadam 2 koty i jedną kotkę.

That was funny translated into English... AI bot?

OP you'll be fine! Just introduce carefully.

cuckyplunt · 01/09/2023 09:04

We have five cats.. far too many, but it happens!
I generally find with cats that if you are open to having one, one will show up. I wouldn’t go and look for one, the universe knows that you have a potential vacancy.

I'm not sure I agree with this at all - two is still very young.

We got our newest kitten when our resident cats were 8 and 3 - it took less than 48 hours for them to accept him and start washing him. After three days they were playing like idiots and they've all been inseparable ever since.

Tilllly · 01/09/2023 09:20

We rescued a mum and daughter when they were v young

Then 3 years later a boy kitten. He's hell on paws, the neighbours call him ASBO cat - he thinks he owns the culdesac

Some teething issues, mainly him hissing at them thinking he's BillyBigBalls

But they settled down. We have the occasional spat and they don't cuddle up together but they rub along fine.

We have 5 cats. Have had 6, have also had five dogs and several cats at the same time. So yes it’s fine but it’s also upto you.
far nicer/ cheaper/ easier than humans! Have had several of those too.

Good to see the absence of kitten climbing nets!

He is very cute looking - what do the sitting tenants think of him?

RandomMess · 01/09/2023 19:32

Our 3 are indoor cats.

I clean up a lot of poop and pee.

koty · 19/09/2023 14:23

Hi,
this post is audent.
I must apologise for writing the post in Polish and not in English.
I am now correcting myself.
I also wanted to participate in the discussion on Cats.
I have 2 cats and one female cat each of them is an individual. and each has different food preferences. These range from poultry livers to dry food as well as wet food. The female cat, on the other hand, changes her feeding style from time to time and flips mice
Best regards to everyone on the forum

WildFeathers · 19/09/2023 14:29

Felloway friends defusers helped our new kittens settle in with older existing cats.

bringonyourwreckingball · 19/09/2023 14:55

I have 3 but we had one then added two kittens - initially tricky but they all mainly get on now just over a year later. Oldest cat is a girl and quite small so I was careful when picking the kittens that the boy was the runt of the litter so not likely to be a big bully to girl cat. In fact they get on quite well, any tension tends to be between the 2 girls
