Which cat breed?

Which cat breed should I own?

I read that there are a lot of cat breeds but those British short hairs are pretty famous and cute.

Any other cat breed options that are friendly and cute as well?

I wouldn't bother with a breed. Tabby or ginger cats have the best personality (writing from experiences), they are also super cute!

Purpleavocado · 24/01/2023 16:41

Mine is British shorthair tuxedo cat, he's a cutie pie.

newtb · 24/01/2023 16:42

Maine Coon, fantastic cats.

moggerhanger · 24/01/2023 16:43

During my cat-owning lifetime I've had two Siamese (gorgeously friendly to family but frit of strangers, and oh my days, so LOUD) and a Maine Coon (very characterful cat, also friendly, and by contrast chilled with strangers). Otherwise I've had mogs. All have been snuggly beauties and the apples of my eye.

NewNormalLife · 24/01/2023 16:47

be prepared for everyone to suggest moggies. we have 2 ocicats. not many breeders in the UK but they're lovely cats. quite dog like in their personalities, they love company, including children, play fetch and are quite intelligent. they're also hypoallergenic - or the most cats can be.

Rebel2023 · 24/01/2023 16:50

I have a black male moggy rescue who is possibly the most adoring affectionate cat! He will chat all day, be hugged/kissed and loves gazing at me 24/7

SusiePevensie · 24/01/2023 16:55

Moggy.

janelaurence · 24/01/2023 16:55

I've just searched. Nice breeds you mentioned here.

Yeah. My friend has one also. That's why I only know the breed.

Moggy.

Best of all, a rescue moggy.

janelaurence · 24/01/2023 16:57

Looks so furry. Like a tiger 😚

Moggy. I have a tuxie rescue. She's lovely and confident and very happy.

DiastasisRectiSucks · 24/01/2023 17:01

Probably a moggy!

I rescued a 3yr old blue British shorthair that had excellent breeding from a trustworthy breeder… the type of breeder that does all the genetic testing etc

Turns out he had congenital osteoarthritis and hip dysplasia (plus slipping hocks) 😬 Had to have a double femoral head ostectomy and arthritis management for the rest of his life. He’s got arthritis in almost every joint that was in the x-rays.

The support group for the op he had is full of BSH and Maine Coon owners. They are not healthy breeds (even setting aside the short face issues for BSH’s!)

SingingSands · 24/01/2023 17:03

Rescued is best. Visit a rescue, spend some time with the cats and one will definitely choose you. Smile

fantasmasgoria1 · 24/01/2023 17:03

Tuxedo here. He is extremely intelligent, very curious, loving and has the worst case of fomo I have ever seen! 🤣 He's absolutely adorable though and I wouldn't change him.

PritiPatelsMaker · 24/01/2023 17:06

Is there a reason you want a breed rather than a beautiful and very loving Ginger Tom? Wink

daretodenim · 24/01/2023 17:13

What's the specific reason you want a breed?

Unless there's a very specific reason you want a breed, first visit a cat shelter.

Then think about why you specifically don't want one (or more) of them.

Go home and think about it before making a decision.

If you've got kids check the shelter will let you adopt too - some don't.

AnnaMagnani · 24/01/2023 17:16

Rescue moggy.

However my heart has been won over by my rescue Arabian Mau. Bright, athletic, super chatty, ridiculously confident.

justasking111 · 24/01/2023 17:26

Had a rescue tortoiseshell she purred from the moment she arrived for 18 years even as the vet treated her over the years

DIL has a ragdoll who I swear thinks she's a dog. Lovely nature.

70Cats · 24/01/2023 17:36

Ragdolls rescue. Fabulous cats, they think they are dogs, will follow you around and have an opinion on everything.

VeryQuaintIrene · 24/01/2023 17:38

Manxes are wonderful, playful, devoted and intelligent, and their little stumpy tails are delightful.

Floralnomad · 24/01/2023 17:40

Siamese especially if you want a cat that really wants to know you .

AnnaMagnani · 24/01/2023 18:08

To be fair, I had a tortoiseshell moggie who followed me everywhere, even into the loo.

The Mau will follow us home if he is out and about. We look nuts, taking our cat for a walk. He does sometimes need persuading out of a tree though.

moggerhanger · 24/01/2023 21:43

Overbreeding in pedigree cats is beginning to be an issue, like it is with some breeds of dog. One of my Siamese was a kind of rescue, and the previous owners gave us his pedigree. He had the same great-grandad twice, and his great-great-granny was also his granny (or something similar). He was a darling and had no health issues, but who knows about his littermates.

Anawilliam850 · 25/01/2023 15:21

I own a calico cat, they are so beautiful, I recommend to you this breed
