Puppy and Holiday

Hi,
just needing some advice, we have just got a 12 week old puppy and are off on holiday in 3 weeks, puppy will be 15 weeks when we go.
we can’t decide whether puppy would be better going to stay with friends who don’t have dog but have had in the past or back to the dog breeder with its mum and other dogs and puppies.
Any advice much appreciated
Thanks.

I'd say puppy is probably better going back to breeder with its Mum and Siblings.
We had a similar situation when we got rookiepup - was only one week not three though- and decided to go for paid for care, rather than having friends look after him as we were worried he might pick up bad habits and that toilet training would cease, plus it's a huge ask for someone to look after a puppy that young.

Sorry just reread your OP.

I had initially assumed that the other puppies would be the siblings of yours, but my view would change if the owner is really running a professional breeders. I'd want to know where puppy will be and how he'll be looked after.

Darktimes35 · 01/08/2022 11:04

Can you not take the puppy with you?

Howem · 01/08/2022 13:14

There will be her other siblings with the breeder if she goes back there and the mum. Just not sure if it’s a good idea for her to go back or better if she does.

unfortunately we can’t take her with us.

She would be with either friends or mum and siblings for 2 weeks. It’s 3 weeks until we go away.

Assuming the breeder is a decent one, I'd always send back there, if you can. Your breeder can continue socialisation while you are away and is much less likely to let training (e.g. toiler training) slip.

misses the point of post You got a new puppy 3 weeks before you go away for 2 weeks??? Poor pup

I agree

I agree

This was my thought too. Puppy is a huge commitment.

Back to breeder is probably the best option but such poor planning.

This, poor puppy.

blackgreywhite · 01/08/2022 18:19

That is poor planning, either way the poor things is going to be confused. I would ring the breeder for advice, some dogs don't want their puppies back after they've gone - they are fed up of being mauled and jumped on by them.

Spanielsarepainless · 01/08/2022 18:23

Poor puppy.

NiceTwin · 01/08/2022 18:25

Back to breeder, really you should have delayed picking it up until after your holiday but I guess that ship sailed a couple of weeks ago.

AllPlayedOut · 01/08/2022 18:26

Why the hell would you get a puppy when you know that you're going on holiday just 3 weeks later? Did the breeder know this?

mumto2teenagers · 01/08/2022 18:26

Have you just got the puppy? If so I think back to the breeder would be the best option, although timing of getting a puppy is not ideal.

Is the holiday abroad, or is the option to change it and go somewhere dog friendly.

mumto2teenagers · 01/08/2022 18:27

Actually if you have just got puppy in the last few days, I would speak to the breeder and see if this would be an option.

dustandroses · 01/08/2022 18:33

Will the breeder actually have the puppy back? Do they run kennels?

Have to echo other posters, what were you thinking of getting a puppy and then going on holiday?

megletthesecond · 01/08/2022 18:34

It should go back to the breeder who will hopefully find it a better home that is capable of caring for it.

I do hope this isn't real tbh.

Overthebow · 01/08/2022 18:41

You can’t go on holiday 3 weeks after getting a puppy.

dolphinsarentcommon · 01/08/2022 18:44

This doesn't bode well for the rest of this more dogs life. If you can't plan him in to your life as a pup, you never will.

dolphinsarentcommon · 01/08/2022 18:44

*poor

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 01/08/2022 18:48

I wouldn't go on holiday.

This. What an utterly stupid thing to do. You do know this is a living, breathing, emotional animal? And just a baby one at that! It’s not a toy you can discard at your own entertainment. You don’t take a baby dog away from its family and everything it’s ever known, spend 3 weeks (forever in a puppies life) bonding with it, settling it in to its new home to begin its new life, and then fuck it off for two weeks back to the breeders or a complete stranger so you can go on your jollies. And then only to take it back a fortnight later?! This animals going to end up with all sort of emotional problems, including separation anxiety!

garlicandsapphires · 01/08/2022 18:57

I’m sorry but in your place I’d cancel my holiday….
