Hi,
just needing some advice, we have just got a 12 week old puppy and are off on holiday in 3 weeks, puppy will be 15 weeks when we go.
we can’t decide whether puppy would be better going to stay with friends who don’t have dog but have had in the past or back to the dog breeder with its mum and other dogs and puppies.
Any advice much appreciated
Thanks.

Why on earth did you pick the puppy up at 12 weeks? Would have made much more sense to pick up after holiday, or to have not planned a holiday. If i was the breeder i wouldn't have sold you the puppy, or give it back to you if you ask them to look after it for 2 weeks 🤦🏼‍♀️

1 cancel your holiday
or
2 return the dog to be rehomed by the breeder and never get another

(3 are you really that much of an idiot of a daily mail groupie looking for a fake story?)

The "pile-on" on MN usually worries me. In this case it's more than well deserved. I simply cannot believe that anyone would get a puppy KNOWING that they'll be abandoning it a few weeks later AND hasn't given the care of said puppy a single thought BEFORE they got it. This is beyond selfish, cruel and nasty. Would you abandon your baby weeks after it's born to p* off on holiday? How could any decent human being even consider what you are doing. I sincerely hope that the breeder takes the puppy off you, so it stands a chance of getting a decent home.

This can’t be real.

U seriously need to cancel ur holiday, and stay home, going to places that accept dogs. Lots of places now do it.
Or give the pup back to be rehomed, u are going to cause serious separation anxiety to this wee dog.
If u were really serious about being a dog owner and doing your best for him/her, ur holiday would be cancelled already until the dog is trained enough for u to leave him for a few hours, working up to a work day, then an over night and getting him in a routine with other people who will dog sit him. This take huge time.
Future holidays should be planned with him/her as the first thought always.
If you cannot do this or think it is an exaggeration, then you are definately not ready for any animal, let alone a puppy.

I feel really sad for your puppy.

I hope the breeder takes the puppy and doesn't give it back

misses the point of post You got a new puppy 3 weeks before you go away for 2 weeks??? Poor pup

Me three. Bad planning.

Our dog goes back to the breeder when we are on holiday, but we didnt have one (that the dog couldn't come on) for the first 8 months. But I'd be questioning how good a breeder your pup has come from if they didn't check your suitability. Ideally you wouldn't go on holiday...this window of socialisation with a puppy is crucial. But given you seem to be decided that you are going, I would definitely see if the pup can go back to the breeder.

A good breeder wouldn’t have let you have a puppy in those circumstances
You don’t seem to get what getting a puppy actually means, it’s a lifestyle change

ImJustNotMeAnymore · 01/08/2022 19:54

Surely you told the breeder you were going away so soon after collecting before you agreed to buy the pup? I've refused several people who wanted to prioritise their holiday over the pup they wanted. Dogs are a commitment not an item able to be picked up and put down as you choose!
