Why cats and why dogs?

I've been wondering why most people either like cats or they are firmly in camp dog?
I've always known I prefer cats since I was tiny. My family didn't like animals so we never had any pets. Im On cats number 10 and 11 now so its not family influence.
Id only have a dog if it was either that or no pet at all ut cats are my true love.
I wonder why the world is split like this. There must be a reason.

I love both. Can’t be arsed having a dog and I know genuinely how much time a properly looked after dog takes.

I am definitely a cat person. Probably because I grew up with them and have never owned a dog but I don't think a dog would be a good match for my personality. I am naturally on the low-energy side and could not cope with the needs of a dog on top of a busy full-time job and family life. My cat is the perfect let for our family - she largely looks after herself but as soon as we are home she loves to come and sit with (or preferably on) us. She sits next to the table when we eat dinner and sleeps on my feet at night. If I'm feeling stressed her purring helps me calm down.

I totally see why some people prefer dogs. They seem much more openly devoted than cats. I love my cat though, and am quite happy that our lifestyle doesn't lend itself to owning a dog.

Dog owners have put me off dogs. I can’t go anywhere without some vicious beast leaping at me. Too many dogs and too many feckless owners around.

Dogs have owners.
Cats have staff.

Sorry i wil never understand this, although you may have a peferance due to circumstances, you either like animals or you don't!! 🤷‍♀️
