Why cats and why dogs?

I've been wondering why most people either like cats or they are firmly in camp dog?
I've always known I prefer cats since I was tiny. My family didn't like animals so we never had any pets. Im On cats number 10 and 11 now so its not family influence.
Id only have a dog if it was either that or no pet at all ut cats are my true love.
I wonder why the world is split like this. There must be a reason.

@Immaculatemisconception

I don’t understand cats, they seem pointless as pets. My dog is ecstatic to see me in the morning and if I’ve been out. If I’m sad she cuddles me. I walk her twice a day and I love the fresh air and exercise. I meet other dog owners to chat to at the park. All the things I like about dogs, you don’t have with a cat.
My cats are pleased to see us and will come and tell us when their bowls are empty. They lie on laps or beside us on the couch/bed. They miaow or chirrup to us when we come in the room or clap them. They also like to go a walk with us in the estate and it's a regular Friday night routine to go for a walk after we put the bins out.

Cats are in my ooooh, utterly pointless. They do what they like and bring dead animals in, which as a vegetarian, doesn't sit well with me.
A dog is someone who can enjoy exercise with me, can chill out with me and won't bring me dead animals as gifts. Well unless they are a terrier.
It's a deffo no from me for cars. Couldn't be without a dog though!

'It's a deffo no from me for cars. Couldn't be without a dog though!'

Cars are the worst pets! Agree :D

StampOnTheGround · 16/10/2021 23:01

Cats are often very happy to see people too and they can also look after themselves the majority of the time.

Itsbeen84yearss · 16/10/2021 23:08

I grew up with cats. Dh had dogs when we met. His dogs have meant no cat for me and it annoys me. I think dogs are very hard work indeed in comparison to cats and I don’t like the neediness. I didn’t know I didn’t like dogs until I lived with them.

househuntinginthesouth · 16/10/2021 23:10

I have both a cat and a dog and they're both just wonderful. Apart from the cat being easier (because she doesn't need walks and goes out herself) I find them quite similar in that they're both intelligent and affectionate creatures.

Itsbeen84yearss · 16/10/2021 23:11

@dementedpixie my old cat used to walk me to the bus stop for work and my nan’s cat used to walk down and meet me from school when I was little. Same cat used to pee on the toilet lol. Cats are very clever and great company

TheCategoryIs · 16/10/2021 23:20

Cats can clean themselves and don’t generally need you walking around picking up their poo after them.

Cats are awesome but I understand why people find them a bit unfathomable. They are often more subtle with their affection and they like to pretend they have no need of you.

orangeautumnleaves · 16/10/2021 23:24

I have had both. Grew up with dogs and am a bit dog mad tbh! As a kid I was very much in the dog camp. Liked cats but not crazy about them. Then I shared a house with someone who had cats, totally changed my view on them. Have since had 2 of my own. I can now say I love both cats and dogs for different reasons. I love just having cats around and far prefer watching them. I find them quite amazing, love their attitude and independence and they are easier to look after. But I enjoy walking dogs and love their affection and loyalty.

If I had to choose dogs would have the edge, apart from my first cat. She will always be my No1!

Honeyroar · 16/10/2021 23:27

I have two of each. I love them all. One of my cats is very dog like. He likes to spend time with people. He follows me on walks with the dogs if I don’t remember to shut him in the house. He will only go half a mile then he sits down and wails for us to go home (usually in the road on a blind bend so I can’t ignore him!). But there are other occasions when he looks at me like he’s never seen me in his life!! So I’m generally a dog person. They’re just so honest and loving. Both of mine had really dreadful times in their younger lives, but they still love and trust with all their hearts. They’re just such lovely creatures.
Hopefully I’ll never have to choose between the dogs and cats! (or our other animals!)

Classica · 16/10/2021 23:31

Cats coat themselves in cat spit. I'd hesitate to call that cleaning.

HerRoyalNotness · 16/10/2021 23:32

I’d like a dog but they’re too much work.

We have a cat, she follows my son to the bus stop like a dog in the morning and comes home. She’s a lovely wee cat except the 5am wake ups to go outside. So easy to look after

olidora63 · 16/10/2021 23:32

Am a doggie person. Am always greeted with so much enthusiasm…whether it’s a 5min or 5hr separation…she really cheers me up . She is lying at my feet but can guarantee that she will tunnel under my duvet as the night goes on .

Mangofandangoo · 16/10/2021 23:35

You get so much more back from dogs but they are a huge commitment. We have had some amazing dogs who have truly influenced my life.

Currently we have a cat who is an arse but he has some special power over me to make me do what he wants, when he wants 🙄

Pinkchocolate · 16/10/2021 23:39

I really dislike cats, one scratched me and made me bleed when I was young and I haven’t felt comfortable around them since. They’re unpredictable and they can get on anything.
I absolutely love dogs, any kind and would have loads if I had the time and space. They’re loving and needy like my children, just without the mouth. 😀

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 16/10/2021 23:43

It's not split like that despite what people may like to think.

I'm not a cat person or a dog person. I'm an animal person.

I happen to have cats because my lifestyle wouldn't be right for a dog or three as well.

I'm not the only person in the world like this.

Facespook · 16/10/2021 23:47

I don’t like cats claws or the way they smell or the way their bums look and that they walk on the kitchen counters. I don’t like the smell of their food and their hair makes me sneeze. Apart from that I’m sure they’re great Grin
I like walking and playing with my dog, taking her to the pub, cuddling on the sofa.
I can read dogs body language easier than Cats so find them more predictable.

SammyScrounge · 17/10/2021 01:09

Both cats and dogs are wonderful animals
and companions.

AliceinBorderland · 17/10/2021 01:11

I don't like either.

ChristieMalry · 17/10/2021 01:22

Me neither but I think cats are less annoying.

Cats poo in other people’s gardens, which I would find pretty difficult. At least I can clear up after my dog.
XelaM · 17/10/2021 08:33

I find it so off that people can love a cat like I love my dog. To me, cats are scary, feral, mean, scratch, don't like humans and run around the neighbourhood like they are homeless. I don't get the appeal at all. My dog, on the other hand, is like my second baby Blush

MamsellMarie · 17/10/2021 08:43

Cats kill and eat small birds, rodents (not so bad).

Then environmental people ranting about not eating meat, doing away with cattle and sheep yet every other person is getting a dog or cat whose pooing, eating requirements, breathing MUST be doing damage too.

Well exactly. Where do they think pet food comes from and what are the ingredients...meat!
Hopeisallineed · 17/10/2021 08:52

Hmm. Cats are great. Independent and easy to look after. Dogs not so, way too needy. Unpredictable. Bite, maim and kill in some cases. Scary. Lots of dog owners are arses who let them poo everywhere or run at you or don’t keep them on leads. Dogs eat poo an then try and lick your face or hump everyone. They bark constantly. Cats rock. Mine let themselves put in the morning, meaning I don’t need to get up at silly ‘o’clock.
