Help, mummy of 4 day old kittens gone missing [sad]

She has been going out since having them on Wednesday, but only for 5 mins at a time, hasn't been using the litter tray I had left out for her. She went out at abot 9pm this evening & I haven't seen her since. Since getting pregnant, she had been staying out most nights, which I wasn't happy with & tried keeping her in but she would just sit by the door & cry & cry 'till I let her out but had been in every night since having her babies.
There are 3 of them & they are fast asleep at the moment, how long before they miss their mummy? [sad} How do I feed 4 day old kittens? I am hoping that she will turn up soon but any advice would be gratefuly received, surely she will start 'leaking' like we would & remind her to come home??

I think it's a bit early to panic about her not coming back. Hope she turns up soon and hasn't brought the kittens a load of half-dead mice so they can practise hunting...

It it quite normal to leave the babies for this length of time when they are so young then?

I feel a bit better now, thanks j20baby, I was thinking she had rejected the kittens, fingers crossed she will be home soon before the babies wake up

i'm sure she will be, its instinct. i used to take one of the babies near the door when they started crying and she'd be in like a shot!

alfielooloo · 19/08/2007 22:55

She's home! She ran into the house & straight to her babies who were still sleeping & blissfully unaware of their missing mum. Have shut all the windows & doors so she is in for the night now!
I wonder if she was looking for their Dad. This pregnancy was a shock as she was booked in to be spayed. I believe she can't be done now until the kittens are weaned which will be in about 3 weeks time, she could then be pregnant again by then, should I sprinkle pepper onto her to put off the boys?

Good news she is home, but I was told not to get our cat spayed until the kittens are at least 6 or 7 weeks, as they are not fully weened until 8 weeks, although our cat fed her kittenss until about 10 or 11 weeks!!!

j20baby · 19/08/2007 23:03

book her in for when they're about 6/7 wks, even if she does get pg again they will still do it, i thought mine was but she wasn't. also, be aware, that she'll be very very hungry and will probably steal food if she can!

glad she's home

alfielooloo · 19/08/2007 23:04

10 or 11 weeks!! She could have had another litter by then!!!!!!!!!!

and she'll get very skinny and scraggy, you should have seen the state of mine!

babies will be well weaned by 6 wks

alfielooloo · 19/08/2007 23:18

Mum & babies all snuggled up for the night now thanks for all your help, I can now sleep soundly.

Well our babies were not 'well weaned' by 6 weeks.

If you have her sterilised too early the milk dries up, therefore weaning the kittens too early maybe?

j20baby · 19/08/2007 23:25

if you are putting kitten food down for them from about 4 weeks they learn from their mother to eat normal cat food, my cat still fed them after she had been speyed, but it was more for their comfort than to be fed. i was worried that it was too early, but followed the vets advice and they where definatly weaned by about 5 weeks
