Hi all.

Thought I would revive this thread. My 15 year old gelding has been coughing for the past couple of days. He is my first horse so I would value any advice.

Very slight mucus discharge from one nostril. Not coughing when in stable or when walking, but has a good couple of coughs whist trotting. Seems to get better as he warms up. Any ideas or time to call in the vet?

Thanks in advance.

Hey, try soaking his hay (good few hours, not just a sprinkle with a hose) and wet his feed ~(if chaff etc) abit & rub abit of vicks around his nostrils, but id get a vet to check if it carries on... ie. more than a few days.

iss he on straw or shavings? Try switching to shavings too.

no idea when it's time to call in the vet, I know some people give their horses cough syrup but not whether that's a good idea or not?

otherwise would second shavings and soaked hay and de-cobweb the stable, is he spending a lot more time in there than usual?

I asked some more experienced people and they wondered if he was eating ok and whether he had a fever?

Hi Sorry didn't see these replies. Thanks to everyone who took the time.

I got the vet in as his cough wasn't getting worse but not getting better and his mate in the next stable started coughing too, we moved together to new livery.

He has a chest infectiom so it's anti-biotics for a week and then see how it goes. He is in shavings and out more than the previous livery, ie from 2 days per week to every day.

He is eating fine. Thanks again and I'll keep you posted.
