So we have had a recurrent problem with fleas since the summer. I kept applying frontline and using acclaim no luck. Today i phone vet because its got to the point i am pissed of with money i am spending on a product that is not solving a problem. I find out that many people are complaining about front line and the are talking with the manufacterer. So fed up and advantage better work. Has it worked for others?...

No, it didn't work for us. We've had flea problems this year too. We use Advantage now and it seems to be doing the trick. I've read that Bob Martin is to be avoided as well.

MrsCosmopilite · 19/11/2014 17:13

Hmm, we're using Frontline at the moment and it doesn't seem to be working. Cat is thinning out her fur quite effectively.

Vet won't prescribe without seeing the cat, and I can't afford a check up for her (it's £45 just to see her) and treatment. Is there anything effective over-the-counter that anyone can recommend?

Sorry Round, wasn't intending to derail.

PfftTheMagicDraco · 19/11/2014 17:20

I've been wondering if Frontline is still working. If not I'm taking it back to the vets as they recommended it and sold it to me.

EauRouge · 19/11/2014 17:21

Advantage is OTC.

Does your vet surgery not do nurse clinics? My cat was seen by the nurse, given a worming pill and 3 months worth of Advantage and it only cost me £20. £45 is a lot for a flea check!

goshhhhhh · 19/11/2014 17:24

I don't believe frontline is working either. Vet tells us we are not doing it properly. We have frontlined all pets & treated house. Why is our vet so wedded to frontline?

MrsPepperMintonCandyCane · 19/11/2014 17:24

We use Advocate which you can get from vets UK.

Indorex spray is fantastic for the house.

Hassled · 19/11/2014 17:26

I don't think it's so much that Frontline isn't working - it's that the fleas have become resistant to it.

Hassled · 19/11/2014 17:27

I've just reread my post and it makes no sense - ignore me.

Pastamancer · 19/11/2014 17:31

Frontline hasn't worked round here for many years now. I have had my cat for 5 years and was aware of the problem before I got her

MrsCosmopilite · 19/11/2014 17:36

Thanks Earl - I don't think they do nurse clinics. I will try to find out.
The £45 is not just a flea check - they said they won't prescribe without seeing the cat and giving her a once-over (she's 15).

I have used Indorex before and found it very effective. Unfortunately I haven't found anywhere local that sells it. I'll investigate Advocate, thanksMrsP

Hassled you do make sense - it's like anything I suppose; if you have a treatment for something with set ingredients, over time, the thing it is treating (fleas, bacteria, etc.) evolve to become resistant.

I'd bath the cat if I didn't think I'd need a suit of armour/kevlar bodysuit.

elvisola · 19/11/2014 17:44

My cat picked up fleas for the first time a few weeks ago, I frontlined him as it was the only thing I could get quickly and indorexed the house. 3 days later I was still picking out flea dirt, 5 days later I found a huge much alive flea! I got Advantage, retreated him and all traces of fleas and flea dirt gone in 24 hours.

Frontline definitely didn't work.

MrsPepperMintonCandyCane · 19/11/2014 17:48

Amazon and Vets UK sell indorex and its much cheaper than from the vet.

bakingtins · 19/11/2014 17:49

Advocate is prescription only, Advantage is available OTC. The both have the same flea-killer, imidacloprid, but Advocate also treats worms.

NickiFury · 19/11/2014 17:50

The only thing that ever worked for us was the Bob Martin flea collar, which has now been withdrawn from sale because it's dangerous. Frontline is useless.

18yearstooold · 19/11/2014 17:57

We got a massive flea infestation due to frontline being crap

Turns out the DC are allergic to flea bites and are still recovering weeks later -grrr

kylesmybaby · 19/11/2014 18:07

Advantage is fantastic. Never had a problems using IT.

GreenMouse · 19/11/2014 18:55

I use Program for 2 of my cats, it's administered orally so you just mix it with the food. It doesn't kill the fleas but stops them from reproducing. For my third cat who tends to regurgitate a lot I use Advantage spot on. Normally it works well but this summer just gone the flea problem was really bad and Program wasn't enough, so I had to treat all of them with Advantage. I buy both Program and Advantage from PetSupermarket, and if you go through Top CashBack you get some money back.

Frontline hasn't worked here for years.

NoraRobertsismyguiltypleasure · 19/11/2014 18:58

We had our first ever bout of fleas with our current dog a month ago - I bought Bob Martin because I didn't need to go to the vet to get it. It worked a treat, fleas all gone and not been back so far.

airedailleurs · 19/11/2014 19:03

our vet and dog groomer both recommend advocate...

Sabrinnnnnnnna · 19/11/2014 19:04

Advocate is the only thing that worked for us. bastard fleas.

ROUNDandROUNDINCIRCILESMORETHA · 20/11/2014 09:03

Thanks for your replies. Glad we are not alone even though they are right liittle buggars lol. Pleased to hear advocate has worked well for others hopefully it will sort the problem as have people coming at christmas. I am thinking of ordering the indorex spray too as read it doesn't have a 'smell' to it.

Another one here where frontline has stopped working.
Vet said they know and knew it would happen.
Advocate and the kids nit comb (I enjoyed that a bit too much)

Mintyy · 20/11/2014 09:10

I think they do become resistant. Look at all the problems with headlice!

ROUNDandROUNDINCIRCILESMORETHA · 20/11/2014 10:10

Yes lol not had that prob yet thank God.

Memphisbelly · 20/11/2014 10:14

Our vet told us that Frontline had changed the formula and it now wasn't working for a lot of people and told us to use Advocate. Seems to be working so far.
