What fish tanks has everyone got?

We have decided to get a new tank for the new house, as mine is leaking. I can spend about £150 and its needs to be about 4ft long. What has everyone else got and how much was it??
TIA

what have you got at the mo? (if a jewel, you will need a new filter and heater?)

I have a 3 foot Classic Cabinets tank with internal filter and separate heater from LFS - it was about £200 including the equipment and gravel.

Have you looked on ebay?

Oh, not familiar with those. Are they like Jewel with the filter built in as part of the tank? will you need a new filter and heater?

Is it a bad leak? Do you need a new tank quickly?

SparklyGothKat · 05/05/2006 23:46

no, its a slow leak, I just have to keep topping up the water. Its a lovely tank, my mum brought it off a friend and then I brought it off her, not sure how old it is.

A bit less than 4ft that one. You will be able to use the old filter in your new tank until the new filter becomes established with bacteria.

burstingbug · 05/05/2006 23:49

can you fix the leak with some sealent(sp?) if its where the joins are? (too late in the evening to spell)

SparklyGothKat · 05/05/2006 23:51

It clicks onto the side of the tank, and all the wires are built into the lid. If I set up the new tank 3-4 days before we move, will it be ready for the fish??

misdee · 05/05/2006 23:51

i have a juwel rio 180.

SparklyGothKat · 05/05/2006 23:52

did wonder about sealing it myself, but where can I put my fish while I do that?? lol, can;t ask Misdee as I have Betas and they will kill her fish.

Its not the same thing, but i ended up building a pond for three goldfish from the local fair, and it doesnt leak ...yet.

burstingbug · 05/05/2006 23:56

Uuuummmmm In the bath Grin

singledad · 05/05/2006 23:58

ok if you only shower :o

Gingerbear · 05/05/2006 23:58

No, you need to get the tank cycled first - there are two ways, no fish in the tank and use ammonia to start the nitrogen cycle (ammonia-nitrite-nitrate) or, add a few fish at a time over a period of several weeks - which you will struggle to do. What fish do you have? Has misdee got male betta? Male bettas only kill male bettas, but may nip the fins of guppies. They will chase gouramis too, but should be fine with other fish.
Read ROCKER'S article on setting up a tank on the TFC website I linked to, or I can help you out too?

misdee · 06/05/2006 00:00

i have guppies in mine atm.

Gingerbear · 06/05/2006 00:03

If you get a new tank, use the gravel, and decor and filter media in the new tank - that will have all the good bacteria in it, and will stop the ammonia and nitrite level rising too much.

If you can get aquarium sealant, find out how long it takes to set. Fish can survive in a bucket with a heater in and an airstone bubbler for a few hours - perhaps long enough for the sealant to set? You would need to try and keep the filter running too, or the bacteria will start to die off - can you take the filter off the lid?

Gingerbear · 06/05/2006 00:04

bettas can survive in an unfiltered bowl for a while, so long as you change the water. Could you put the rest of the fish in with Misdee's temporarily?

SparklyGothKat · 06/05/2006 00:11

I also have an angel fish. I have just checked the tank again, and it doesn't appear to be leaking but the water goes down so fast.. hmmmmmm

OP posts:
Gingerbear · 06/05/2006 00:22

Could it be evaporation?
how fast?
How often do you do a water change?
