DD is DESPERATE for a cat. Frankly I can't think of any good reason to say no and she has gone on about it for months.

So please tell me why we really don't want one...

Fleas and smelly cat litter.

spacedonkey · 09/12/2005 16:01

Pain in the bum when you go on holiday.

Fleas.

Vet bills.

The smell of cat shit.

Neighbour complaints about cat shit all over their gardens.

The way they always make sure they're on a soft surface when they puke.

They way children can go blind if they handle cat shit.

Will that do for starters?

followthestarlover · 09/12/2005 16:02

pooing/weeing on the floor, cat hair everywhere, you will have to feed it every day, she will get bored of it, cat food smells horrible, it'll claw the furniture, you'll get fleas, vets bills are extortionate, it'll bring dead/live animals in,you;ll all be sad when it dies

allycotownofbethlehem · 09/12/2005 16:04

Blimey. Well. Blimey.

Will show this to DD when I get home.

Maybe get a stuffed one instead...

But they are cute when they're kittens... you must grant me that.

Cat shit/spew on random mornings when you least expect it.
Other than that a nice fluffy bundle to stroke and use as a hotwater bottle in bed.

2manyglassesofmulledwine · 09/12/2005 16:37

Live animals to catch and either rescue or put out of their misery.
Dead animals to step on in your bare feet in the morning.
Live animls you didn't manage to rescue gnawing through cables, sh!tting in cupboards, running across your feet as you sit watching tv at night.
Eaten animals regurgitated for you to step on in your bare feet in the morning.
Digging their claws into you as they try to settle on your lap.
Claws scratching your furniture to shreds. Or indeed your darling baby. Or you whenever you try to worm/deflea them.Worms hanging out of their bottoms if you don't do it often enough.
Everything everyone else has said about vets, going on hols etc.
Oh, and just when you've grown to love them they bugger off and attach themselves to the nearest neighbour who feeds them, until they're so overweight they get diabetes and you're left to do the insulin injections...
Get a houseplant... (oh and cats eat your plants too!)
Love our two!!

gggimmesnowsnow · 09/12/2005 17:04

I have two cats - one is a happy puker - climbs on the table or sofa to vomit - is now banished outside; second is a happy pi*ser - prefers baby's stuff but will piss anywhere - briefcase, fruit bowl, anywhere - is now banished outside.

I used to like cats....

SnowQueenVictoria · 09/12/2005 17:06

They bring in small animals that look like fluffy wuffy hamsters and kill them.

Your neighbours wont like it and will want to throw footballs at it so its cruel to have a cat in a built up area.

Hows that?

I have two cats btw

IOTAnnenbaum · 09/12/2005 17:07

cats are fab and every home should have one

moondog · 09/12/2005 17:08

Even the word 'cat' makes me feel sick......
They eat stinky food and walk on your work surfaces, spreading shit with their paws.
Lovely...

MascaraOHara · 09/12/2005 17:09

SICK, SHIT, SLOBER and HAIR

(and I've got a cat)

Tinker · 09/12/2005 17:10

Makes me wheeze just thinking about this. Tell her her favourite friend/auntie/grandparent is allergic so would never be able to visit her if you got one.

MascaraOHara · 09/12/2005 17:11

ah have just scanned the thread and see all of those things have been mentioned already. oops

Mine doesn't do the dead things though.. would you like mine? she's lovely and house-trained, very fluffy... and..... epileptic!

Epiffany · 09/12/2005 17:12

ours got locked in the living room last night as she would not come to the kitchen (where cat door is) last night when we went to bed
We assumed she wa outside
She was not
5 diarrhoea shit patches later and 3 wees
If you want a cat
she is yours.

Epiffany · 09/12/2005 17:12

and if we leave the spare room door open she always pees in it.

sheepgomeep · 09/12/2005 19:31

The smell of shit in the cat litter tray [puke]

you can have my cat too if you want

BluStocking · 09/12/2005 19:35

I have never felt more in tune with my fellow MN-ers!

santabops · 09/12/2005 19:48

they are not a dog

santabops · 09/12/2005 19:48

they are not a dog

JingleShells · 09/12/2005 19:49

Fleas though.... they will infest every inch of your house and you will never get rid of them.

mumfor1sttime · 09/12/2005 19:59

Meet my cat George -

His daily life ;

7am - feeds himself biccies from his self feeding dish

All day - sleeps near the airing cupboard, with one or two ventures out of his cat flap to go to the loo

7pm - has his tea

all night - Goes outside to mix with his fellow neighbour cats.

Cant see how having a cat is such a pain myself!
As for the fleas - I treat George once a month, and never see fleas.

Go for it!

Passionflowerinapeartree · 09/12/2005 21:14

Ours do the dead and alive animal thing and Yummy does puke sometime but I think on the whole the pleasure that the DD's get from them outweighs the problems by far. Especially DD2 who is a bit middle child syndromish. Even DH is starting to get attached to them and he started out calling them vermin.

Also they dealt with our mouse infestation very effectively.

MerryWays · 11/12/2005 22:26

I love mine dearly, but yesterday one of them walked through an oil puddle & left black prints all over carpet, sofa etc..............

How do you swarfega cat paws

TurkeyGang · 11/12/2005 22:33

Aaah...cat puke. I have paddled in it in bare feet on many a morning. What a great start to the day. Also everything at the vet's seems to cost at least 50 quid.

I still like cats though - not sure I want one again (or any pets) as we are currently pet free, but my dd is dropping some rather large and regular hints too.

allycotownofbethlehem · 12/12/2005 11:09

arrgghh - I still can't decide. Methinks will wait until after Christmas....
