DD is DESPERATE for a cat. Frankly I can't think of any good reason to say no and she has gone on about it for months.

So please tell me why we really don't want one...

It's yet another thing that you have to take care of, feed, take to see medical people, clean up after...
It's OK if you no longer have a baby, and the children do love him, but so far he is well behaved. Only one poo on a bed when he got stuck inside.

they are pests won't leave you alone as kittens, rubbing themselves on you and getting on your lap and back etc every time you sit down

generally irritating and nuisances all their lives and vets bills can be high if they are territorial which they usually are

dejinglejags · 12/12/2005 11:18

I can't - I love my two cats so much.

They are good companions, very faithful and just add value to my life.

It isn't all bad

my dd has a kitten about 4 months old going spare if you want one

leggymamba · 12/12/2005 11:35

If you get one make sure you insure it. I backed the car over our 'little darling' 5 days before giving birth to ds! Cost £900 to put right - too guilt ridden to have her put down!

She was always very clean, but has since taken to weeing anywhere. if we shut the door to the spare room will then pee against it! Have taken to screaming at her......if you didn't cost so much I'd kill you!

Buy dd an oxfam goat and get someone else to do the work! Or adopt a neighbours cat, feed it, give it diabetes and let them inject it. Never again....although I said that about a dog.

ONLY get one if YOU want one. you'll be doing the work and getting the guilt and paying the vets bills.

we have two cats. they're mine not the children's. am promising dd1 a guinea pig for her 6th birthday but only because i actually like animals so don't mind the idea of looking after it if she's not up to it.

Have to say, I would get the cat. Our strange creature Lilly (a rescued male- we neamed him before we realised they'd sexed him wrongly) effectively saved my life by biting DH's leg until he came to me when I was expecting DS1, had hyperemesis and had gone into a coma in bed from dehydration (DH had been at work so assumed that I'd gotten up and had gone back to bed for a nap).

have had a LOT of cats over the years, as dad and I used to adopt the older / sick farm cats when I was living at home. Have met some right evil ones (Lilly was a classic- had been named Frankenstein and couldn't be approached for a week) but never yet met one I couldn't get close to with a lot of love and care.

Cats aren't what people say though, all independence and no responsibility, in the main they need ove and kindness so only get one if you can give it. Our creature even walks to school with us in the mrnings to say goodbye to the kids, not a sign of the classic independent unlovong feline!

I was so relieved when we palmed our cat off to our babysitter - apart from leaving dead animals in various states of death & digestion our cat was also totally OTT cuddly - all over you like a bad rash, rubbing her bum in the baby's face at every opportunity and suchlike.
Had a very viscious one from the CPL once too - a feral cat which tried to attack dd when she was tiny and crying. That cat also used to wipe it's ar$e on the floors all the time - lovely to come down to skidmarks all over the place in the morning. And yes, we did worm it regularly. Guess it just didn't fancy licking itself clean.

handlemecarefully · 12/12/2005 12:44

They are hideous, scratch you and have defective personalities

allycotownofbethlehem · 13/12/2005 10:17

oh god am wavering now.

They are just so fluffy.

maybe WILL wait until after Xmas. Watch this space!
