Petition: Fund cardiac screening at age 14 years and cardiac awareness programme

Fund population cardiac screening for every young person when they reach age 14 years. The screening should be undertaken with a review of family history and electrocardiogram (ECG) followed up where necessary with echocardiogram (heart scan).

Thank you. It was a while ago now 10 years ish. But she was devastated and it changed the course of her life.
the worst thing I’ve ever had to do in my life, by far, is to wake my DD up to tell her her boyfriend had died the previous evening.
And if he’d been screened he wouldn’t have died.
it is mostly young men that this affects I think, isn’t it?

KnickerlessParsons · 10/06/2026 11:49

I’m proud to say that DD has got her life back on track and still fundraises for CRY on a regular basis.

Walkingnice · 10/06/2026 11:54

With screening, rare inherited heart conditions would be picked up. We need to stop these 12 sudden cardiac deaths happening every week. Every signature will help. Thank you.

RaininSummer · 12/06/2026 13:05

Signed and shared. I didn't know so many were lost on this way

Walkingnice · 12/06/2026 13:18

My child survived a cardiac arrest and was found to have an underlying heart condition. Screening would have picked this up.
12 young people die every week and we desperately need to get to 100,000 signatures by July this year. My heart goes out to every family who has lost a young person x

The government response mentions a consultation happening "in the spring". This was published a few days ago and is here:
https://nationalscreening.blog.gov.uk/2026/06/08/uk-nsc-consults-on-screening-for-cardiac-conditions-associated-with-sudden-cardiac-death-in-young-people/

There is a brief summary of new evidence and it says that the initial view is that there is nothing new here that would change their recommendation not to screen.

If you disagree, respond to the consultation via the link on that page. They will obviously prefer statistical type evidence, but impact stuff might move someone...

UK NSC consults on screening for cardiac conditions associated with sudden cardiac death in young people  – UK National Screening Committee

The UK NSC is consulting on evidence relating to screening for conditions that can cause sudden cardiac death in young people.

Devils advocate here. Whilst I agree this is a good idea I trust also that all those who have signed would be happy for £x to come out of their wages or benefits each month to pay for it.

it Is no different to all the other screening delivered via the NHS- breast screening, cervical smears, bowel cancer screening, pregnancy scans etc. Most would want these available. I’m in Scotland where we pay more tax anyway. I pay 42% on everything beyond £43k.

Iloveeverycat · 16/06/2026 17:29

This is really good. We were lucky enough when my DS was at secondary school they had a team come in and offer cardiac screening to students.
