Devils advocate here. Whilst I agree this is a good idea I trust also that all those who have signed would be happy for £x to come out of their wages or benefits each month to pay for it.

It would be a lot cheaper than the alternative.

I had my youngest child screened through CRY last year, they do amazing work.

I have already signed, but well done for highlighting this issue.

Also signed.

I won't be signing. I have a different perspective on this.

My children have a 50 per cent genetic risk of a cardiac muscle issue that could cause sudden cardiac death.

They can have the screening at any time, but what then? Are they all going to be fitted with internal defibrillators? What good will knowing do?

It limits their choices, especially going abroad to work - medical insurance will be harder to obtain.

It can cause anxiety, maybe stop them playing the sports that they love and potentially have to be disclosed to a romantic partner.

It may never cause an issue - it has not for any of their relatives, who found out later in life after they had lived a full and active life.

Knowing can sometimes cause more harm than not knowing.

Or your child could have an underlying heart condition silently destroying their heart and then ultimately a cardiac arrest could happen. and you already know there is a genetic mutation in your family. Screening would allow them to live a life but be closely monitored. Upthread I said my child survived a cardiac arrest. It’s from a genetic mutation. I would rather have them in the world than not. They are still living a life , these restrictions that you mentioned are minor for them. Yes they have a ICD. And personally they would have anxiety knowing they could have a cardiac arrest without monitoring.
But I truly appreciate everyone who has signed and thank you all for doing so.

1000 percent happy to pay.

We lost a brilliant young man in our family too soon. I also know 3 other affected families, two through work and one through school.

hmmm
I am not sure on that actually.

That’s why all other screening is done. Catching an issue early before it causes problems is cheaper, easier and more effective than dealing with later problems.
In my case, my DDs friend died because of an undetected issue.

Here’s a link to find screening events in your area carried out by CRY https://www.testmyheart.org.uk/

This organisation is just absolutely fabulous. I was born with CHD but didn’t know until last year, I was 35 when diagnosed after presenting at A&E, I’d been symptomatic for 4 years and told it was just ✨anxiety✨

Since, I’ve had my children checked for CHD, and then I found out about this organisation from my consultant who works closely with it.

My daughter has been seen by them, she is 15, my son is only 11, but I plan to have them both checked heart health wise every 3 years as advised.
