They're not free though are they. Why should the taxpayer fund free lunches for all rather than providing for those below a certain income threshold?
Pariswhenitdrizzles · 20/06/2017 18:09
Thanks mog :) (love your username btw!)

I won't be. I think it's a huge waste of money and should never have been started.
I don't agree with taxpayers money funding free food for those that don't need it. I'd rather they upped the cut off and enabled more key stage 2 children to have fsm. Or even those at secondary. Neither have universal fsm.
I think the quality isn't good enough. I've seen the waste in several schools. Fruit and a measly spoonful of veg are rarely chosen. If they land on plates they are often left. Few children choose a brown banana or rock hard pear over cake.
Fsm don't stop obesity. Obese children are over eating before and after school probably more so. My children who aren't overweight came home starving most days after school dinners and would devour anything in sight.
Breakfast is a more important meal imvho. Having gone the whole night without food we all need refuelling. You'd be surprised how many children go without breakfast.
Floralnomad · 20/06/2017 18:18
I agree with pp , this should never have been started in the first place , the money would have been better spent extending the scope of FSM across the age range or even giving extra money to families currently on FSM over the holidays when obviously they have to provide all the food for the children .
SquidgeyMidgey · 20/06/2017 18:19
I agree with Fizbo that the money should be concentrated on those who need it not thrown around willy nilly.
Whiskeywithwater · 20/06/2017 18:19
No, those that need them will still get them. I can afford to pay for my kids school lunches - whether hot dinners or me making them sandwiches and would prefer the money was spent on more deserving cases than me and people in a similar position to me!
MrsPorth · 20/06/2017 18:22
I'd rather focus the funds on providing meals to children from chaotic and deprived backgrounds, and on improving the quality for all.
WorraLiberty · 20/06/2017 18:23
I also agree that feeding kids whose parents can afford to feed them, is a huge waste of money that could be much better spent elsewhere.
AndNowItIsSeven · 20/06/2017 18:24
Do people realise that the working poor do do not receive fsm. Just 50p a year of wtc means you are not eligible.
FizbotheClown · 20/06/2017 18:28
Then up the threshold so more children in ks2 and secondary can have them. Don't waste the money on those well able to afford them and the rich. Why do only ks1 children count?
It was a Nick Clegg vanity project and wrong on so many levels.
Floralnomad · 20/06/2017 18:29
andnowitsseven , that's why people are saying the money would be better spent extending the FSM to a greater number of people who actually need it ,

We'll be moving this thread to Petitions and activism soon.
anditwasallgoingsowell · 20/06/2017 18:30
I won't be. I would rather my kids fsm was given to someone that needs it. Perhaps even breakfast and lunch for those in need.
GreenHillsOfHome · 20/06/2017 18:31
No chance...complete waste of funds. There are a hundred other things education related on which the money could be much better spent.
EpoxyResin · 20/06/2017 18:33
I'm signing. Not least because scrapping them would be a scandalous waste of money; means testing is EXPENSIVE! But mostly because I think it's absolutely right to offer ALL children free school lunches, regardless of whether their parents would be deemed "needy" enough by the same government which has deemed so many "able to work" who have gone on to die shortly after.
EpoxyResin · 20/06/2017 18:36
Absolutely, means testing would be an ABHORRENT waste of money, and all to avoid giving a free lunch to a child whose parent might just be able to squeeze they're finances that little bit further.
LittleBooInABox · 20/06/2017 18:36
I won't be.
It should be means tested. The irony here is hilarious, rich people should give up there homes, but got free meals for there kids. I can't even!
Means test it. Those who are able can pay or send it pack up. Those who can't afford it will still get it.
FizbotheClown · 20/06/2017 18:37
They manage to means test for CB.
Free school meals for all- from 4-16/18,and which money tree would the fundage for this be coming from? Ignoring the fact that the majority don't need them anyway.
Chattymummyhere · 20/06/2017 18:38
I'm not signing and one of my children benefits from this. I don't see why they did it. It's not expensive to make a pack up you can do it for under £5 a week if you need too. I have no problem paying for my children's lunches I don't need the govt to pay for it. The money should be used for those who actually need it.
HotelEuphoria · 20/06/2017 18:41
Sorry no. Free School Meals should be for those that genuinely need it, not everyone.
