Indeed! Yes!

This isn't pedantry. It's mocking a local accent.

Clarinet1 · 11/10/2026 14:42

I was wondering if it might be “Cohort”!
Particularly likely given the context.

It's the school I went to.

Agree, what an unpleasant post.

Not sure what difference that makes.

Hatty65 · 11/10/2026 14:46

It's very similar to the way many of my school mates spoke.

Why are you surprised by it? Presumably you understood it. I agree with pp that this isn't you being pedantic - it's you being rude about people's accents and dialect.

OP maybe you’re not sure what pedantry actually means? Ironically….

blacksax · 11/10/2026 15:01

They wouldn't say that at the school I went to. Far more likely to be channelling their inner Love Actually and saying 'Where the fuck is my fucking coat?'

That's a bit of a stretch to assume isn't it @NorthByNorth.

It did feel alien to hear that when I was at the same school and wouldn't say it like that.

Implying local accents are equivalent to "speech defects"?🤔

blacksax · 11/10/2026 16:12

I suggested to somebody quite recently that they were complaining about a regional dialect, and they replied saying oh no it's not. Oh yes it was, but what's the point in having a conversation with some random online whose opinions are that fixed?

This. It's not how I speak but a lot of people do speak like this in my area. It's not ungrammatical.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 11/10/2026 16:16

That's not ungrammatical. Mocking accents is pretty unpleasant.

Arlanymor · 11/10/2026 16:18

It's an accent and just because you went to school with this person and maybe their accent was different at the time, it doesn't mean it will remain the same over time. Also comes across as classist to be honest. I am so fed up of people making out that accents are a problem. You knew it was coat, so what's the issue? It's not pedantry, it's just damn rude.

TheBluebird · 11/10/2026 16:26

I have no problem with a strong local pronunciation. I live near Hull and love the strong Hull accent.
Coat / Curt
Toad / turd
Er ner! / oh no!

That isn't the same as incorrect use of a word or grammar such as brought for bought .

Turd! 😂😂😂😮‍💨

Honds · 11/10/2026 16:39

So some people have retained the local accent from where you all came from. Jolly good.

Yaw'd tek right agin my West Midlands y'am yaw accent, not as a pedant but as accent intolerant which is just snobby.

It's true. On BBC Look North there was a feature about some toads. I forget the context but the presenter, a Hull lass, managed to say turd/ toad about 75 times.

mtobrokeme · 11/10/2026 16:47
