Is it Nottingham or Derby?

Banjas · 11/10/2026 17:38

Where is it ?

Livpool · 11/10/2026 17:45

So? I am a Scouser and don’t have a strong accent at all - most people say I sound vaguely northern. I don’t mock or cry ‘pedant’ when I hear a strong Scouse accent. I love all the different dialects and accents.

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 11/10/2026 17:51

I'm not even northern but I like to refer to the dish of sausages in Yorkshire pudding batter as turd in the hurl. OP YABU

PrettyLittleRose · 11/10/2026 17:52

Probably for the best if you ask for this thread to be deleted @TheAverageJoanne Not cool mocking peoples regional accents.

It's always Northern and Midlands accents too.

.

This isn't pedantry. It's mocking a local accent.

Indeed. Rather shitty behaviour.

I lived in Hull for a short time and as a southerner found the accent fascinating.
Loving ‘turd in the hurl’ 😁 It takes me back

😆 Took me a minute to get 'turd in the hurl.' 😂

BillieWiper · 11/10/2026 18:38

That's you phonetically spelling out a regional accent in an attempt at mocking it.

Unless she wrote it down or typed it like that? No pedantry took place other than your lack of ability to know what that word means?

SerendipityCat · 11/10/2026 18:53

It would have been very similar at my old school, only “coo-ert” would have simply been “coit” - one syllable, pronounced like “quoit”. Much like “coal hole” would have been “coil ‘oil” - West Yorkshire, 1960s. Such a shame it’s dying out.

I have no problem with a strong local pronunciation. I live near Hull and love the strong Hull accent.
Coat / Curt
Toad / turd
Er ner! / oh no!

That isn't the same as incorrect use of a word or grammar such as brought for bought .

I've heard people on TV with this accent and always wondered where it was from.

WildWindLandscapes · 11/10/2026 19:39

Many years ago as a student teacher on teaching practice in Manchester, I sat in on a primary class who were having a spelling test.
Amongst the list of words to spell, the teacher read out "ant".
Every child wrote A-N-T and every child were marked as wrong because the word was "aunt" but with a northern accent. Poor kids were all told off as well and I suspect many left school that day confused....

The teacher should have used the word in a sentence so they knew what she was saying. Was her accent different to the children's? My accent was different to the children I taught but I would modify my speech to closer to theirs when necessary

I love the Hull accent.. I have to ask, did you ever go shopping "on rurd"?

TheAverageJoanne · 12/10/2026 11:46

Do you think accents like these will fizzle out as mostly older people use them? I'm nearly 40 and I know people think I'm a snobby cow, I did pronounce words correctly before going to university but then being around people from various parts of the world and then working with people from all over the place made this accent really stand out. It's accent not dialect, which is probably going to fizzle out as younger people don't speak it.

Well, I live and work in Barnsley and the worlds finest accent/dialect doesn’t appear to be going anywhere, thank god.

No they won't fizzle out and no, it's not older people. You only have to listen to a bunch of Hull school teenagers to hear the accent at it's finest.
Dialect OTOH may well die out but it's not the same as accent.

I love this clip from Irish comedian Bernard Casey about the difference between a coat and a co-at.

I love this accent. I’m also Irish and it’s a Kerry accent (where Bernard is from).

Banjas · 13/10/2026 09:22

Whenever I hear of Barnsley I always think of the late Michael Parkinson.

SomethingFun · 13/10/2026 09:30

I’m from Barnsley and although I haven’t lived there for a long time my accent still shines through sometimes and I am proud of it and proud of being from Barnsley. Can’t be doing with snobbery and shite like that about accents. Imagine people having the actual audacity to have grown up in a working class northern town and not being ashamed of it.

Don't you know we should all be speaking BBC English now? Except not even the BBC do that anymore!

You starting a thread to mock and shame people about how they pronounce things isnt going to help people feel proud of where they come from and how they speak is it?
