This is a new one to me. Saw it on a thread earlier.

Oh, I see 'by and large.' Oh dear.

MyManinCaracas · 30/09/2026 15:09

From a person who has heard it but has never read it. It’s by and large and it means overall.

MyManinCaracas · 30/09/2026 15:12

One of many reasons why people should read proper books.

ShittyGlitter · 30/09/2026 15:12

That’s quite funny 😁

KitchenDancefloor · 30/09/2026 15:13

A new one to me was ‘or sank’. Took me a while to realise it meant ‘or something’ in my local dialect. Really creative spelling that makes sense when said in an Estuary accent.

But why would you use a phrase where you don't know how to write it or what it means without bothering to look it up and find out what it should be?

Well, it’s not a particularly complicated phrase or meaning. People use it in speech all the time, so it’s one of those mistakes that’s easy to make if you’ve only heard it spoken.

Yes, we know, that's why the op posted it, presumably.

Gotback · 30/09/2026 17:11

Well that's the death nail for me (seen recently on another thread).

I often wonder this!
2 more gems from threads that I've seen today;
'You would off'. I guess it meant ' You would have' and was written by someone who could neither speak nor spell correctly

'Tow the line' . I would love to know how the poster would do that, are they picturing a tug-of-war rope? The line in question is a starting line, as in a race and one should toe it.

for me it was ‘Ano’

could not for the life of me figure it out. Context didn’t help, nothing.

in the end remembered that these were kids I’d known when I lived in Middlesbrough. Read it in an exaggerated boro accent and finally got it…

”I know”

Idontjetwashthefucker · 30/09/2026 17:55

Not sure if it belongs here but on our local FB group, a shopkeeper apologised for not being open recently as she'd had a menty B.

Shudders

Why the spaces before the punctuation?

I despair.

HorribleHisTories15 · 30/09/2026 22:53

@Idontjetwashthefucker what’s a menty B please? Is it ‘meant to be’?

But when they do write it what sense does it make? By enlarge? Enlarge what?
