my dd is Zoe...she has the two dots above her e...i thought this was called an "uumlat" (or similar!) and was to make the E sound like an eeeeeee, ie. "ZowiEEEEE"
rather than no sound as in joe...(sounding like row)

so, have i got it right, and why doe some zoes have the dots above the o, and lastly, how do i type them on my keyboard????

many thanks, oh wise and clever ones!

I'm sure you wouldn't need to bother with the umlaut, would you? The name is well and truly anglicised now.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 29/04/2008 10:29

Umlaut, yes

No idea how to type it

stuffitllama · 29/04/2008 10:32

I have never heard of anyone called Zoe being called Zow. Unless it's a nickname. Even without the umlaut it's obviously Zoe.

stuffitllama · 29/04/2008 10:32

Zo -- eeeee I mean

fruittea · 29/04/2008 10:32

If you go into Insert, then Symbol, call up your chosen font, you can find the umlaut and insert it from there, and can also attach a shortcut key to it. There might be a quicker way, but at least that will work.

Botbot · 29/04/2008 10:34

I know a Zoe with the umlaut. I think it's a nice touch, even though the name is anglicised these days so you could get away without one.

I type on a Mac and to get an umlaut I do ALT + U then type the E. I presume it's something similar on a PC.

ë. There.

squigglywig · 29/04/2008 10:37

If you're on a PC there will be a code for you to type - usually alt + some numbers. I think for ë it's 0235 but I'm on a mac so I don't know.

On a mac you can either change the language to one which has it as part of it's character set(the flag at the top) and then use the alternate keyboard layout. Or press option+u and then the letter you need - so for e: option+u followed by e.

Poledra · 29/04/2008 10:38

On my PC, it's Alt+0235 (holding down the Alt key as you type the numbers)

ë

Madlentileater · 29/04/2008 10:38

actually, i think it has a different name when you are using it like that. the umlaut changes the sound of a vowel in german (so a with an umlaut sounds different to a without one) whereas in Zoe the mark tells you to pronounce the e seperately to the o. But I don't know what it's called! ANd I agree you don't really need it. How old is DD? how much does she like explainig tings to people?

mellyonion · 29/04/2008 10:41

testing....nope! can't get it to work!!

é....got it with an accent!!

é and again!

no...not with an umlaut! i'm on a pc....

it keeps coming up with a menu thing on the top of the page..... grrrr.

she likes her dots! shes only 4, but already uses them.....

i feel a bit silly really for putting them in when i don't know what they're called exactly....(must have been in the early sleep deprived and trying to regain some control days!!!) .but they are there, and they're staying!

My god, you're right .

You learn a new thing every day, etc.

Am off to inform my friend Zoë-with-umlaut that she is in fact Zoë-with-diaeresis (she's about 12 feet away from me).

Bramshott · 29/04/2008 10:50

Press ctrl, shift & colon together and then the e.

Bramshott · 29/04/2008 10:51

Chloe has one too doesn't it? I can never remember whether above the o or the e?
