To point out that it’s have, not of.

There have been a couple of threads recently with the word “of” after “should” or “would”. It doesn’t make sense. It’s “should have”, “would have”.
It causes me great distress, so I’m hoping if I point it out, it won’t occur so often. I can’t even write the incorrect phrase as autocorrect changes it immediately, so why is it so common here?

OP, those who live in glass houses (use apostrophes with plurals, see 'OP's' in one of your posts above) shouldn't throw stones.

Americano75 · 30/04/2023 22:54

You're slagging people off for 'ranting' yet you started the thread. And I didn't say you called anyone stupid but some of the replies supporting your post are.

Does it matter that I started the thread? Does starting a thread always warrant ranting replies?

What's the point of having a chat sub-group called pedant's corner if you can't make pedantic observations without being criticized? Genuinely confused! I happen to agree with OP. I hate the use of "of" instead of "have". And I'm very poorly educated.

ShoesoftheWorld · 30/04/2023 23:01

The thing is, OP, that tiresome threads making dramatic statements of semi-mock horror at other people's spelling and grammar mistakes are regular occurrences on here, and it never takes long for the classism and ableism to start. At the very least they have an unpleasant superior and self-congratulatory vibe. Your thread does seem very much in the same vein, tbf.

Thank you, I didn’t claim to be an expert on all things English and I am quite happy to be corrected. I don’t think that makes you “sneering” or nasty.

You don't get to police the tone of the responses you get, that's not how it works. Just because people have had a strong response to your post doesn't mean they're 'ranting' either ffs.

Because it wasn't posted in PC, it was posted in AIBU originally.

You “don’t get” to tell me how I reply to posts either :)

No, but I do get to call out your hypocrisy when you whine about all the 'aggressive and ranty' responses you've been getting.

Perhaps I have some insight into not starting any threads on MN. Stupid of me to think people wouldn’t take it far more seriously than it was meant and answer in the usual style of indignation and outrage.

You were taking the piss out of people with poor grammar skills and that does tend to provoke outrage in decent people.

I think not starting any more threads would be a good idea.

I mean what next? The hard of hearing? People with poor eyesight?

Swansandcustard · 30/04/2023 23:11

Why is it every time a their/there/they’re, your/ you’re etc. gets called out, out come the ‘but dyslexia’ weird how it’s always those words. I think I see more people use ‘your’ wrongly than correctly on FB (and MN more and more). It’s not about ‘can’t be bothered’ it’s YOUR fricking language and YOU’RE getting it wrong!

and I think the op was being sarcastic with the ‘distressed’. But no, pick on that.

If you don’t like the correction why on earth comment on a post on Pedants’ corner?!

I know that it's 'should have'.This is how I would write it, but speaking in my accent/colloquial language, I say 'should of'. Because we all do around here.

I find that Southerners mix up were and was in a similar way.

I understand it's wrong. But I wouldn't flip my lid over it.

If this really does put posters off, it might be a good thing, becausea good deal of the replies I see to most posts are unnecessarily argumentative, harsh and aggressive towards the OP’s, so if it’s someone that’s in any way sensitive, posting here is probably not going to be the best help they could get.

Said the pot, rather ironically, to the kettle.

I don’t feel superior. It wasn’t meant to be taken so seriously.

Well, lesson learned.

You've been offensive. You might not have wanted to be (yeah right) but, as you've seen, you were.

Hopefully before doing such a nasty thing again, you'll stop and think.

Doubtful mind.

You clearly don't have a problem with people unable to punctuate the most simple sentences though.

I'd watch myself in glass houses. Especially if there are stones around.

If you scroll down through old threads in PC, there are some really interesting observations and discussions about language, its quirks etc (for example, why we all pronounce weak forms with a schwa vowel rather than a full vowel- which leads to some people thinking that "have" in connected speech is written in the same way as of. Not sneering, just observing, which is what actual linguists do. Or, the interesting thread about why the less/fewer "rule" isn't nearly as clearcut as posters who don't go to Tesco anymore since they "made a mistake" (TL:DR- they didn't) )

It's true that nowadays threads on here tend to be of the type written by the OP, sadly. HQ should delete them really rather than legitimising disgusting comments about people with dyslexia like the one from pp.

When Pedants' Corner was set up it wasn't to guffaw at other posters' 'lack of education'! Surprised MN shifted it over.

Quite. I think HQ themselves have decided that if they shove all these point-and-laugh threads over here, nobody will call it out.
They're wrong.
