To point out that it’s have, not of.

There have been a couple of threads recently with the word “of” after “should” or “would”. It doesn’t make sense. It’s “should have”, “would have”.
It causes me great distress, so I’m hoping if I point it out, it won’t occur so often. I can’t even write the incorrect phrase as autocorrect changes it immediately, so why is it so common here?

It's basic English and anyone not knowing this clearly didn't pay much attention at school!

I'm very embarrassed for you if your intelligence levels are this low.

Can you really not think of any other reasons? I mean even if you sit down in a dark room and really really try to tax that little brain?

Obviously we're not talking EAL here because that's learning a whole new language which follows different rules and grammar patterns. Particularly if you're French native and have no H sound in the language, so "I should have" always sounds a little more like "I should 'av" which could easily be confused with "should of".

I certainly hope you're not referring to dyslexic people, as that's quite an insult. It's not a dyslexia thing.

"Should've = should have" is taught at primary school KS2, KS3 secondary school and KS4 secondary school, so anyone who went through the UK education system will have been taught this.

I look forward to you enlightening my low intelligence little brain...

Because people don't know it's wrong.
The same as every other nasty, mocking thread about other people's SpaG. Must be about 2 days since the last one.

Discusting!
Should of put this in Pedant's Corner.

It's basic English and anyone not knowing this clearly didn't pay much attention at school!

It similar to posts where people can't express themselves easily due to very poor use of English grammar, then rant and rave when people don't understand what they're trying to say.

It's a key skill to avoiding conflict being able to express yourself clearly without misunderstanding.

So I guess if you didn't know should've = should have, then you do now!

You've made a typo...

Yet your own English would win no prizes.
As an English teacher, I'd say (and in the spirit of your own observations you'd clearly be happy with my help) you need to go back to the drawing board with punctuation, you need to reread before pressing post, and your sentences are very rambling.
Obviously, you've alluded to having comprehension problems yourself when reading posts from others, so perhaps I shouldn't mock you.

Oops, I just did.

@NeatCompactSleeper because they may come from countries were education is prized. They may also have taken grammar lessons or an interest in grammar while learning English - something most native english speakers do not do.

Oh the irony! I of course meant 'where' not were!

I think you meant English as well.

It's fabulous how Muphry has raised his head not once, but twice on your very short post.

I know for a fact it puts some women off of posting on this site, and some of them could really do with some advice.

MNHQ came down hard on threads like this and the sneery SPaG posters for a while, but don't seem to bother lately.

Imagine having poor spelling and grammar and being too worried about posting, because you know there'll be some narrow minded idiots judging you.

faffadoodledo · 30/04/2023 14:06

@NowZeusHasLainWithLeda but I'm not mocking anyone. The only thing I did was defend speakers of English as a second language against accusations that their English might be awry.

Yes, I've noticed that.
They used to delete all the nasty comments and TAATs regarding people's SpaG. Now they just let them crack on.

I reported a few earlier this week where they were actually quoting what a poster on another thread had written. Pointing out which thread it was so they could all go over and laugh. HQ didn't delete it.

Couscousmoose · 30/04/2023 14:07

it happens because we contract should have into should've which sound like should of so shove off 😂

I hear you.

I just don't agree with you saying I bet most of those for whom English is a second language get it right!

They very often don't but as long as they're understood (which they very often are), it just doesn't matter.

Whilst mocking native speakers.
Here's a thought. Why not try, really hard, to not mock anybody for their SpaG?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 30/04/2023 14:09

IMO it’s often true that non-native speakers are likely to get these things right more often than not.

While teaching EFL overseas, dd once had half a dozen students from a fellow teacher’s class come to her, very worried because they thought he had written something incorrect on the whiteboard, but they weren’t sure - and wanted to check. It was something really basic, e.g. it’s/its, your/you’re, there/their.

Dd said it was bloody embarrassing - the other teacher was a Brit! - but she had to put them straight.
And before anyone says these things don’t really matter, these students were preparing for important exams, they were paying good money for their classes and would have lost marks for basic mistakes. They deserved better.

Shameful when it's more important to let nasty people get their kicks and feel superior, than to include everyone and to have some understanding of why they might have poor SPaG.

That's the problem with paying £1000 and getting a CELTA sadly.
I had to rewrite one of my new teacher's reports for the same mistake the OP is getting distressed about.
Obviously totally different context and totally unrelated to someone posting on Mumsnet.

NeatCompactSleeper · 30/04/2023 14:12

Surprisingly the OP has lit the touch paper and fucked off 🙄

JenniferBarkley · 30/04/2023 14:14

Imagine being so superior about basic SPaG.

It's not a difficult thing to get right, so clearly people who get it wrong do so for a reason - many examples already explained on this thread. Why you would judge someone for that is beyond me.

It's also worth noting that not everyone on MN speaks English as a first language.

Hardly anyone who learns as a second language would make this mistake.
When you learn the basic building blocks of a second language, unless you are learning everything by ear, then you know that "have" is the auxiliary to form many verbs, so it wouldn't cross your mind to start using "of".

Yep.
I am old enough to remember when PC was a quirky little place where posters like the wonderful Prism would be so interesting and informative about language. Now it's just full of pointing and laughing and "mwahaha, she wrote rest bite" (I mean, come on, anyone talking about receiving respite, whether they can fucking spell it or not, is clearly going through something that's not all hearts and flowers, yet the SpaG twats, instead of supporting, start a sneering thread)

The Dunning Kruger bits are such fun though.

Utter rubbish! 😂

Most foreign people in my area are learning from the people around them in the community.

Many can't speak a word of English when they arrive, so they're thrown in feet first and learn from what they hear.
