Why can’t people spell lose?!

MsWalterMitty · 12/01/2022 19:45

I love reading through the dieting topics on here, they’ve really helped and everyone’s so supportive…. Maybe i am BU!!!! But the amount of posters who can’t distinguish between lose and loose is really annoying!

You realise this is pedant's corner?

It wasn't originally, it was moved here by MNHQ.

Andtheyalllookjustthesame · 12/01/2022 20:17

Definitely/defiantly is often a spell check thing for me, so when I see other people do it I know they are probably just like me and got caught out by typing quickly, getting spell checked and not proof reading.

Loose/lose does seem to happen a lot. But my bug bear is specific/pacific.

Chocomelon · 12/01/2022 20:17

Draw and drawer

Que and queue!!

SoupDragon · 12/01/2022 20:18

It’s not about making people feel like wankers

That is the end result of what you are doing though.

I now!… I mean know 🙄… However this mistake isn’t consistent on MN, whereas lose/loose is

Don't you like having your mistakes pointed out to you?

😆😆😆😆😆

Just spat my gin out after reading that 😆👍

SoupDragon · 12/01/2022 20:19

Anyway, I'm off. These threads are always wanky and judgemental.

viques · 12/01/2022 20:19

Sorry OPI have no advise, sorry, advice, perhaps someone can recommend me a book. There, that is two of my particular cringes out of the way in one sentence.

How much harder is it to write “recommend a book to me” than to write “recommend me a book”. It is even easier to write “recommend a book,” please, think of my blood pressure.

Genuinely don’t bother me

Good and food do rhyme!

FireDancer1 · 12/01/2022 20:21

@DowntonCrabby

I used to be a judgemental dick (internally, never openly on a public forum) about SP&G too until my eldest was diagnosed with dyslexia and I grew up.
Exactly!

@PinkPlantCase

What does lose mean? I don’t think I knew it was a word 🤣
Lose is the verb of loss eg "to lose weight"
LizBennet · 12/01/2022 20:23

Well this has heated up 👀

PAFMO · 12/01/2022 20:23

@Gettingusedtothelimelight

Bit like people that use i instead of I 😂
Or the people who use "amount" when they mean "number".
ParishSpinster · 12/01/2022 20:23

Accent. But what accent can make good not rhyme with food? I can't figure that one out.

MsWalterMitty · 12/01/2022 20:25

It should cool back down now a poster has flounced

I say good: gud and food: food.

I can’t understand which way round you pronounce it? Fud or gud?

@ParishSpinster

Good and food do rhyme!
Maybe with a Scottish accent?

In my accent they are more like “gud” and “fooood”.

Geamhradh · 12/01/2022 20:28

@KhaleesiOfChaos
Actually, PC used to be for people interested in linguistic quirks to talk about them. Something shifted a few years ago, and now sadly, and inevitably unpleasantly, it's become more of a "point and laugh" zone.
Though it's always nice to see Muphry and Dunning-Kruger working together.

Rodion · 12/01/2022 20:30

In this case I think if you can't automatically remember the spelling of lose, you might quite reasonably refer to the word choose and follow the spelling pattern. You'd be wrong but it'd be understandable!

FunkyPhantom · 12/01/2022 20:30

If anyone is going to loose weight would their clothes then be lose ??

iheartredsquirrels · 12/01/2022 20:30

@Paranoidandroidmarvin

Wow. Good to know that people on here are so judgmental of people who haven’t had a good education or are dyslexic. What a way to make people feel like they can’t post.
These judgy 'I've got a stick rammed up my arse' types get everywhere sadly, with no thought for anyone else . It comes across as bullying in many cases.
