Why can’t people spell lose?!

MsWalterMitty · 12/01/2022 19:45

I love reading through the dieting topics on here, they’ve really helped and everyone’s so supportive…. Maybe i am BU!!!! But the amount of posters who can’t distinguish between lose and loose is really annoying!

It’s likely predictive text has a lot to do with it

Very judgemental. Lots of reasons for imperfect grammar such as, native language, poor education, dyslexia. Must be lovely to pick holes in people when they need help.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 12/01/2022 20:00

@teaandtoastwithmarmite

I hate should of instead of should have
This one drives me mad. It's everywhere.

It’s not judgement… it’s pointing out something that is wrong.

My bugbear is the mixing up of "effected/" and "affected". I know it is also used as a noun as well as a verb, but it seems many people use "eff" when they mean "aff"

SoupDragon · 12/01/2022 20:01

It’s a service… now those who thought they could spell lose will now now how to spell it

Know.

SudokuMania · 12/01/2022 20:02

Not on here but I see a lot of we’re for we’ll and you’re for you’ll.
“We’re do that next week”
“You’re be ok don’t worry.”
Usually on FB/IG and in text messages.
Sets my teeth on edge

That's usually autocorrect- it does it to me. And then I have to send another message correcting it.

Woofwoofbarkbark · 12/01/2022 20:03

Why the fuck is it lose? And not loose.

It has an oo sound.

Why do good and food not rhyme?

Because... the English language has no rules and us dyslexics are left looking like wankers in front of you lot.

LizBennet · 12/01/2022 20:03

The lack of a full stop at the end of a sentence irritates me more than a spelling mistake.

EmergencyPoncho · 12/01/2022 20:04

You are my people!

@LilyMumsnet

Hi OP

We're just moving this over to pedants corner!

When loose and goose rhyme with moose, but choose rhymes with lose, it’s no wonder people get confuse…d

Wigeon · 12/01/2022 20:08

I’m a proud pedant, and pretty hot on all things grammatical/spelling, but I do have a bit of a blind spot for lose/loose…

I now!… I mean know 🙄… However this mistake isn’t consistent on MN, whereas lose/loose is

NellyTimes · 12/01/2022 20:10

Presumably they then spell loose 'Looose'

It’s not about making people feel like wankers… it’s an anonymous forum. Now you can go about your days knowing the difference! So you won’t feel like a wanker in real life

I'm dyslexic. Not sure what that's got to do with it really as i prefer to learn how to say things correctly, rather than just continuing to get them wrong

KhaleesiOfChaos · 12/01/2022 20:11

@DowntonCrabby

I used to be a judgemental dick (internally, never openly on a public forum) about SP&G too until my eldest was diagnosed with dyslexia and I grew up.
@DowntonCrabby You realise this is pedant's corner? A section literally dedicated to threads like this, for people who like correct spelling and grammar. We're not judgemental dickheads Hmm
LizBennet · 12/01/2022 20:14

Maybe read their post and note the time, and then read MN's post and the time.

LizBennet · 12/01/2022 20:15

That was to KhaleesiOfChaos.

Cookiecrisps · 12/01/2022 20:15

I dislike it when people spell disgusting as discusting.

DowntonCrabby · 12/01/2022 20:15

Yes, I see the thread was latterly moved over, it wasn’t originally posted there.

ipreferbooks · 12/01/2022 20:15

'Lose' doesn't look right

Hairyfriend · 12/01/2022 20:16

I get annoyed with 'Recommend me a new .....'
also desert and dessert. 'I ate the most delicious desert!' Grin Always makes me laugh.
