How do you pronounce the word praline, as in posh, nutty chocolate?

  1. Praw-leen
  2. Pray-line
  3. Prah-leen?

3 different people in our family say it 3 different ways- Who is right?!

Well I have always said Prah-lean, but my (properly posh) MIL says pray-lean.

morethanpotatoprints · 11/05/2015 15:06

prowline

DuncanQuagmire · 11/05/2015 15:07

prah leen

YDdraigGoch · 11/05/2015 15:09

The French way "prah leen"

TooManyHouseGuests · 11/05/2015 15:11

If it's a burnt sugar candy studded with pecans, then it's a "prah lean."

If it's a fancy bite of chocolate then maybe a pray-line.

I am dead certain about the first (and if anyone wants my grandma's recipe, I'll share.) not quite so sure about the last though.

DuelingFanjo · 11/05/2015 15:19

I say Pray-lean - whoops, is that terrible wrong?

123Jump · 11/05/2015 15:22

DuelingFanjo so do I! I like to think we are exclusively right.

InAndOfMyself · 11/05/2015 15:22

Not in New Orleans. I'm American. I have lived in New Orleans, the land of pralines in the US, where the correct pronunciation is prah-lean so that is how I pronounce it.

YDdraigGoch · 11/05/2015 15:42

Atomic, there's no apostrophe.

How does everyone pronounce "nougat"?

My common family have always sayd "nuggat", but I've recently heard "Noogah".

holmessweetholmes · 11/05/2015 15:42
  1. I have never heard 1.
Lilymaid · 11/05/2015 15:47

Prah-leen and Noogah.
There is an acute accent on the last letter of praline only when it is an adjective.

holmessweetholmes · 11/05/2015 16:38

Yy to the version with the accent being an adjective - du chocolat praliné - 'pralined' chocolate.

holmessweetholmes · 11/05/2015 16:39

Grr - why don't accents work on the MN app?!Angry

anothermakesthree · 11/05/2015 19:59
