Bob is more knowledgeable than I.

or

Bob is more knowledgeable than me?

I used the first version yesterday and was corrected by someone who said it should be the second. If I google it, there seems to be no consensus of opinion. While the general feeling is that the former is grammatically correct, the latter is becoming accepted usage.

Opinions, please! and please agree with me because the person I was arguing with is really smug and needs to be taken down a peg or two

Bob eats more than whom? - correct, yes?

Bob eats more than me - correct by extension... or not?

StealthPolarBear · 05/03/2012 17:08

What do you mean Imps?

Bob burps more than me/I

TheAlmightyBob · 05/03/2012 17:08

I thought I knew then I got all confused and now I don't know if I am fatter, prettier or juicier than anyone or whether I lkie sarah either.

ImpYCelyn · 05/03/2012 17:08

eyes degree certificate for linguistics, contemplates returning it

StealthPolarBear · 05/03/2012 17:08

I'm quite pleased Bob like Sarah more than me!

ImpYCelyn · 05/03/2012 17:09

Stealth - yes, if in question form it's whom, then surely in statement form it should be me, not I.

But I think I'm still not getting my examples right.

Northey · 05/03/2012 17:10

I think you need to stick a subject in in the first half of the sentence to make it clear, imp.

Bob eats more food than me.
Bob eats more food than I do.

In the first instance he's eating more food than he's eating me (lucky me, I think).
In the second, he's eating more food than I am.

Also, I don't think it should be "whom" in question form. Just to throw us all back a stage.

I hate Bob. In a simple, positive and non comparative way.

TheAlmightyBob · 05/03/2012 17:12

I bloody don't eat more food than you Northy.

TheAlmightyBob · 05/03/2012 17:12

Shock Sad

StealthPolarBear · 05/03/2012 17:13

I think Bob burps more than me is wrong because if you are comparing two things they should be of the same form

"Bob burps more than me" implies that "Bob me" is a correct phrase.

e.g.

"Bob burps more than scratches his balls"

StealthPolarBear · 05/03/2012 17:13

EXACTLY Northey

ImpYCelyn · 05/03/2012 17:14

Agree Northey. I think I've just proved that I was wrong :o

Bob kisses Sally more than me
Bob kisses Sally more than I

In the first Bob is kissing Sally, and kissing me
In the second, Bob is kissing Sally and I am kissing Sally

think I have got back to what nickel saud half an hour ago

Northey · 05/03/2012 17:15

I'm not even sure what you're agreeing with me about any more. Unless its the Bob-hatred.

Sorry Bob.

StealthPolarBear · 05/03/2012 17:15

sorry no, Maryz, could do, but replace burps with sweats in that case

StealthPolarBear · 05/03/2012 17:16

I was agreeing with Mon 05-Mar-12 17:10:47

justonemorethread · 05/03/2012 17:17

It's to do with a ccusative but I think when you are using the verb 'to be' then you use nominative I will Google and update later as I hate posting from this stupid smartphone!

ROFL - it's descended into chaos - I blame Bob.

Bob demands more than me = Bob demands more things/people than just me/I am only one of his demands cheeky sod

Bob demands more than I = we're both demanding, but Bob is more so.

Right?

nickelhasababy · 05/03/2012 17:18

it is whom in question form, and i didn't mean Bob is me in the knowledgeable question! I meant I am me.

think about that one - I am me, therefore Bob is more knowledgeable than Me.

you know what?
maybe we should ask Bob, seeing as he's so bloody clever.

StealthPolarBear · 05/03/2012 17:19

YES
