and there is no such thing as "duck tape"!

Or maybe there is, but it would surely be for very specific uses only.

That is all.

Aren´t duct tape & gaffer tape more or less the same-but gaffer tape is easier to get off without leaving "sticky" behind & it´s easier to tear?

BertieBotts · 04/11/2011 16:29

I must tell you all my friend's excellent awful joke about Gaffa Tape.

Gaffa Tape is like The Force. It has a dark side and a light side, and it holds the universe together.

(The same friend used to carry a small flattened roll of it in his wallet at all times "for emergencies" Confused)

SardineQueen · 04/11/2011 16:37

duck brand

"The Duck® has been delighting consumers with these products for over 20 years and continues to innovate and offer solutions for the household."

Not quite as long as duct tape has been in use.

Dillydollydaydream · 04/11/2011 16:39

Lol sunshine I always thought they were raw plugs Blush

sunshineoutdoors · 04/11/2011 16:52

Wow! I can't believe how much there is to say on this subject! I am a bit concerned that I have read this whole thread and found it quite interesting!

It's amazing what counts for entertainment when you're at home with a baby stuck on your breast all day bloody growth spurt

SardineQueen · 04/11/2011 16:55

Get used to it sunshine. I have been entertaining myself this way for 4 years now Confused

Snorbs · 04/11/2011 16:57

Gaffer tape is for when you want to be able to remove it later.
Duct/Duck tape is for when you might want to remove it later but won't care if it leaves a mark.
Speed tape is for when you want the bugger to stay put.

Tanyaaah · 04/11/2011 18:09

So if you happen to see someone's list at B&Q, with Duck tape written on it, you might be annoyed...? But then you wouldn't know if they wanted proper branded Duck Tape! Oh dear, this could go on forever!

trixymalixy · 04/11/2011 18:17

I would have put money on it being called duct tape first!! You learn a new thing everyday.

Carpet tape is the double sided stuff AFAIK.

SomethingSuitablyWitty · 04/11/2011 19:17

Just checked in to see how my thread was doing and was disconcerted not to be able to find it. Well, I am glad that the duct tape wisdom continues to flow (we've learned so much, haven't we?), but still just a little miffed. See, that was my first ever thread in the lions' dens that is AIBU and now it has been turfed out and shepherded to a safe corner of MN where like-minded people can join me in my tutting. AIBU unreasonable to mind? I did not know threads could just migrate if they did not fit the strict criteria for the chosen section. Sheesh.

Then maybe I'll just go back over there and share my views on the deliciousness of a few unwashed and unweighed grapes while one does one's shopping .

I'm quite excited at the prospect of speed tape snorbs. There have been far too many occasions when duct tape just hasn't cut the mustard.

I didn't know the sneaky thread moving happened either SomethingSuitablyWitty, do you think a pedant reported it? I don't like being in Pedants' corner, my spelling and grammar isn't up to the scrutiny.

AWimbaWay · 04/11/2011 20:51
  • spelling and grammar aren't up to scrutiny? (See!)
Blu · 04/11/2011 20:59

I have seen gaffer tape pull varnish off wooden floors, the nap off corduroy and skin off flesh, so I wouldn't use it if you want something that won't leave a mark!
Masking tape or electrical tape os what you want for no mark..

tearsbeforebreakfast · 05/11/2011 00:15

its not exactly strict, its not even close to an AIBU, is it now?

KatharineClifton · 05/11/2011 00:27

Ahem, I was taught it was called elephant tape. By my carpenter father. He also says raw plugs. I had no idea it was rawl plugs.

KatharineClifton · 05/11/2011 00:30

I've found the ACTUAL name Gaffa Duck duct elephant strong cloth tape

HTH Grin

startail · 05/11/2011 00:48

I'd always assumed gaffer tape British, Duct tape USA name for the same thing, but it seems not.
Gaffer tape is stunningly useful stuff. Essential for school fete rigging because it will hold, posters, bunting cables etc even if it rains or the surfaces are faintly damp.
Of course the missing paint on sign at school has nothing to do with me gaffer taping a large don't forget the cake stall sign to itBlush

workshy · 12/11/2011 23:25

if you went into B&Q or another large DIY chain (ahem, HOMEBASE) and asked for Duck tape then you would have a selecton of gaffer, duct and carpet tape as they make all 3

did anyone know there is now also something called Frog tape?
